Pre Med and Wharton: Help Wharton/Penn Students

I have two interests: business and medicine. I was wondering if any of you know anyone who has managed to get the 4 yr degree at Wharton as well as having taken the recommended premed courses, succeeded in them, and do well on the MCAT. I have done a considerable amount of research on this, and I know it is a rare and very strenuous courseload at UPENN. I am a very hardworker, having never received a B. However, I do not consider myself a genius, but a very hard worker. I have received a composite 1600 and 2370, to show I do have some smarts :), but I do believe those achievement have arisen from hard work. I just want you to know this, because I want to know if I have to ability to successfully complete this endeavor at PENN (assuming I get in of course :). Knowing that one of the essay questions is “what courses attract you to PENN”, how can I show what I want to do in a positive light (because I know this med/business thing isn’t really “meant to be at PENN”).

Here is another way I am approaching this. What if I attend the SAS and major in, say, biology. How many courses can I take at Wharton, factoring in APs, double counts, and the like? I am more interested in applied business courses like marketing or OPIM. How feasible is this?

Thanks :).

I've known/heard of many people who have been able to finish at wharton and complete the required courses for med school on top of studying for the MCAT. After looking over the career surveys from 1999-2004 (which have about a 50% response rate), there were a total of 9 students who ended up getting an MD. So there are at least 9 if not close to 15 in the last 5 years who have gone onto med school. So it is definitely doable.

I have a few classmates who did that. One is at Hopkins now for med school... not sure where the other one is. But people definitely do it. OBviously not as many as there are in the College, but it's still doable.

Wharton + premed reqs? ...good luck with that
btw, I know a guy who was in M&T (Finance&BE) that submatriculated into the Healthcare MBA/Masters of Biotech program, who is now studying for the MCATs "just in case" the business thing doesn't work out... so yes, if you are brilliant then anything is possible

"One is at Hopkins now for med school... "
Wow.

"Wharton + premed reqs? ...good luck with that"
Exactly.

"so yes, if you are brilliant then anything is possible"

You think so?

If any of you know someone who would not mind my talking to me (email, IM), I would GREATLY appreciate it if you could give me a contact. I REALLY need to talk to someone who has done this... APPs are coming SOON.

My interviewer talked about his experience at Penn. He said that after going to an economics lecture at Penn, he fell in love with the field, and I believe he got his degree in Wharton, and went on to finish his pharmacy degree. Today he runs his own pharumetical company.

wonderful.

See I am telling you all, this combination is awesome. There needs to be a combined program in this for Wharton!!! Talk about a huge revival... Maybe I could pioneer it...hahah.

Does anyone know if someone has managed to graduate from the M&T program, while satisfying preMed requirements, and then applied for med school and got admitted?

I'm quite sure that people have done that. Bioengineering is the most popular SEAS major, and its BAS degree, which is designed for premeds, would be attractive for many M&T peeps, cause getting a bse in SEAS and a Wharton degree is one of the hardest things to do at Penn. People do it, but not often.
