Pre-Med at a UC but NOT Bio major

Hi guys,
I'm pre-med but I'm majoring in Sociology. I was wondering...is it hard to get pre-med courses at UC's if you're NOT a Biological Science major? Do Bio science majors get priority? I hope someone with experience answers. Thank you in advance!!

I think most UC base priority on the number of units. Also don’t take any pre-med courses at CCC.

Well, you just need the pre-reqs for med-school. That’s why people just tend to major in biological science because just by majoring in that you get all the pre-reqs out of the way

For the record I disagree with jblightly. Many people take premed courses at a Ccc-- some of them do all of them at a Ccc and they still get into medical school. There are some schools that don’t take Ccc credit however they are in the minority. Ive seen people take Ccc premed courses get into Harvard medical school so the whole don’t take Ccc premed courses is myth-- that’s of course if you do well in those courses, do well in your mcat, and upper division science courses (if you’re a science major) to prove you can handle the material.

As far as taking bio courses at a uc, they will probably be hard to get into because most premed courses coincide with other major prep courses for example general chemistry is for per med, pre dentistry, pre pharm, engineers, etc. not to mention these classes are also generally taken during freshmen and sophomore years. I don’t know if transfers have priority though.

I checked out UCSD’s schedule…I’m kind of surprised at how many open seats there are for General Biology…I thought it would have been FILLED to the point where the waitlist is no longer available. And UCSD is known for impacted Bio.

This is very interesting Acoustickitty123…
I am at a CC right now, planning to transfer in the Fall. But I’m also a Sociology major, but very interested in going to medical school.

I’d love to know,

Have you already statred taking the required classes for med school yet?

Are you at a CC or UC right now?

Do you plan on changing majors, or just sticking w/ Soc while also fulfillng the med school classes?

Hi RCA!!! glad to know you’re a Soc major also! I’m currently at a CCC and I took my general Chem courses along with my General bio classes (but at a diff community college). I’m definitely staying a soc major because I heard med schools like variety. They’re tired of seeing bio majors and Chem majors. I’ve called and asked and they all tell me it’s better to major in anything but bioscience. Even if I wanted to change my major at a UC, it’ll be difficult. HOWEVER, my friend called UCSB and asked if it would be hard to get Bio classes at UCSB if you’re not a bio major and he said it’s impossible. Total BS because there are nearly 40 seats open every semester. EVEN at UCSD where bio is ridiculously impacted.

@RCA: Oh and please let me know if you have any other questions. I’d love to help :-)

Cool, thanks so much for responding!
Yeah, I’m sure it is not impossible to get those core classes at a UC.
Is UCSD your school of choice?

Anyways, besides those core classes, i think the MCAT is what really matters.
I’m definitely looking into some internships, volunteer work, or programs related to the medical field.

UCSD is def my first choice. We’ll see. Haven’t been accepted or rejected yet. mcat is really important but so are extra curriculars and science +overall gpa.
