I got into the Macaulay Honors program at Baruch and was planning on majoring in economics with a pre-med focus. I'm pretty set on going to Duke but 60K vs. free tuition and a laptop is kind of difficult.

Any input?

I think you be more happy with the MHC @ Baruch. Debt is a big headache espeically when you want to go on to medical school. I don’t know about your financial situation.

Here is a true story. I go to CCNY and a senior friend claims he gets $10k ~ $15k in his pocket every year. He goes to MHC @ CCNY and he has applied to numerous scholarships, and he also gets FA from the government. He is also going to Stanford with a federal grant for his PhD.

He is making money without even working. Just go to school. My other friends are also “making” money $3000 ~ $8000 per year. You can do a lot of things with this money. You can go on study abroad (MHC covers $7500), you can go to cultural events because you have money in your pocket. You can pay your MCAT (I think MHC also covers it) and etc.

You are really good with MHC. If it is possible you may think about transferring to CCNY, or Hunter to get more pre-med focus. I don’t know if it is allowed within the MHC. But CCNY has the Sophis Davis, biomedical engineering, and strong biology department. Economic wise, CCNY is pretty good too.

Beside, you are going to be in the City. If you have been in the City forever, well, it isn’t a bad thing to stay here for a few more years. You will find a lot more medical-related internship, volunteering opportunity just being in the City.
