Are the science courses extremely hard to do well in? What have u heard about premed?

being pre-med at brown is not nearly as cut throat as it is rumored to be at other places (hopkins, princeton, etc). since you take pre-med classes with many of the same people for three years you often get to know some of them quite well. generally, people are really helpful and all of my labs were a positive experience.

it's not a walk in the park either though--epecially if you are shooting for A's. most people get B's (~50%), a nearly equal number get C's and A's, and a small number does not pass. The percentage of people not passing tends to be most significant for the first two chemistry courses (Chem 33 and Orgo) and this is where most of the "weeding out" happens

as with most things, how well you do directly correlates with how hard you work--which frankly, is a good thing since you wouldn't want a doctor who was averse to hard work. most of the people who don't do well realize that they simply do not want to be a doctor badly enough to work as hard as they need to to get A's

Does Pre-med mean you're taking prereq. classes or is it like a certain major? Do you apply as Pre-med or apply for whatever major and then pursue pre-med?

Pre-med is a set of pre-req courses that a person takes before medical school. It consists of:
A year of Freshman Chemistry along with the appropriate laboratory courses
A year of Organic Chemistry along with laboratory courses
A year of Biology along with laboratory courses
A year of Physics along with laboratory courses
A year of English
A year of Calculus or other advanced math classes, including Statistics

You would take these courses in addition to the courses for your major.

brown seems to be a pretty good school to take the pre-med requirements at because i read they have something like a 97% placement rate into medical school.

can you AP out of any of these year course requirements? Or do the APs only help u take more advanced classes in these categories? Also what is PLME... I'm thinking it's like an advanced pre-med. program that brown offers... or is it like the 6 yr program @ Northwestern? I heard that it's really hard to get into tho... On your application can you apply as for PLME & then if you're not accepted into that, can you be accepted to the school w/o PLME?

thanks CDN dancer & stupefied06

Med schools don't like you using AP credit to get out of pre-med courses. You can either take more advanced classes, or "retake" the intro courses.

PLME (sorry, don't remember what it stands for) is an 8 year program that you apply into as a high school senior. Basically, if you maintain a minimum GPA (I think it's somewhere around 3.2-3.5, but you'll have to check their website to make sure) and take the pre-med courses, you are guaranteed a spot in Brown Medical School. When applying for PLME, I think there's a spot where you can say whether or not you want to be consider for regular Brown undergrad if rejected from PLME.

that 97% placement rate .. sometimes they calculate that for students who have a certain gpa so their college looks higher. is that 97% number for all students or say all students with a gpa higher than 3.5?

i'm sorry but i wouldn't know. that reasoning does make sense.

man, pre-vet folk have to take all that PLUS microbiology and biochemistry, and in some cases, bussiness, nutrition, etc. OY VEY.
