Does anyone know about pre-med students at CMU?
What is their acceptance rate into med school?
Is it a good choice to go to CMU for Biology major even though it isn't a strong Biology school?

i too would like to know about this.

on their website it says they have an 85% admittance rate to med school but i dont know how accurate this actually is, since for all i know they could inflate the rate heavily or there could only be a few premeds every year.

I don’t know if things have changed since I graduated several years ago, but when I was at CMU my biology class was a great group of students. Very smart, very qualified for medical, dental, even law (biotech type stuff). One of my classmates was a Rhodes scholar. I think it might be a little unfair to say that CMU isn’t a ‘strong’ biology school- I think it might get a bad rap because the department is so small. The first year has a lot of large lectures, but soon enough people ‘weed’ themselves out of biology, and you end up with a much smaller class in sophmore, junior years. As a result we got a TON of personal, individualized attention! One of my classes had only 9 students in my junior year. So, it ended up being pretty easy to get great letters of rec because we got to know our professors! Friends from other schools tell me they barely spoke a word to their profs because there were so many bio majors.

I don’t know the exact stats on admittance rate… I think that it might be high possibly because the biology class is so small… but I will say that I did the pre-med route and went off to ivy league universities after CMU. I’m still studying at Harvard for a post-doc degree. I recently randomly met a girl who graduated 2 years ago who is now at Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

In the end- looking back now, I think going to CMU probably made me look ‘unique’ and helped me. Schools know that CMU is challenging, and also they don’t get as many applicants from CMU. Hope this helps.

Thanks. The info did help. Are there a lot of research opportunities as a pre-med at CMU though?

Also, do people drop out of biology because of the difficulty? Why is the group so small?

You’d be able to find people in bio, chem, and biomedical engineering at CMU for sure. If there’s nothing there that interests you there’s always Pitt right down the street with its massive hospital system.

My roommate is a medical school-bound senior biology major, so yeah, it works out. And we have a very good biomedical engineering department as well. Said roommate works at one of the UPMC hospitals. I’m not intimately familiar with being premed at CMUl, but with CMU’s strong programs and the fact that one of Pittsburgh’s biggest industries is med tech, it has to be a pretty good place to be.

they said in an information session that the med school acceptance rate is 95%

95% could be deceptive. what if most of that 95% ended up going to some really crappy med school in the midwest?

in any case it looks like they have good research so w.e

info session said there is 30-40 kids who apply each year from CMU with about 85% acceptance rate. you can look at student services to see how the bio majors do after they graduate, a couple go to top med schools each year

So then, if you major in Bio, what schools do you apply to then?
