Pre-Med at Cornell

For all those undergrads at Cornell hoping to go to med school or Cornell alumni in med school, how good is Cornell for Pre-med? Is it very hard to earn a high GPA? What is the acceptance rate for Cornell undergrads to med school for the most recent year? How does it compare to your peers?

Anyone?

I am not a student at Cornell (but my son will start in August) but maybe I can answer your question for you. Cornell does not have a pre-med major. I work in the healthcare industry and most doctors I work with had an undergraduate degree in the sciences but I do know one that was an English major. If you pick a major that is hard for you then your GPA will reflect that. Cornell, like most schools, tell students that want to go into medicine, to take preparatory coursework that will prepare you for medical school. My son is also looking to go on to medical school but I would caution him, along with you, to focus on the college experience first and find what you like. If you were smart enough and well-rounded enough to get into Cornell, I am sure your GPA (which is only one part of the medical school process) should reflect just how smart you are and you will be just fine.

@TheZohan‌ hi! I’m a rising sophomore at cornell. Honestly, it’s not easy to come out with a good gpa. Most science class curve on the b b- line which can be damaging to a premed gpa. It’s doable, but not easy. I’m prelaw, but a bio major, so I’m basically the same as premed when it comes to science classes and gpa concerns. Still, it’s doable and , should you decide not to go to med school, a Cornell degree can take you far.

^ I second the above poster. I am also a rising sophomore and have taken a few of the introductory bio and chem courses. It’s not impossible, but it’s not easy.
