UF honors offers honors advising (seperate counselors from general admission). Many of the students I met during an honors preview used this resource during all 4 years undergrad. Many were on their way to top med schools. UF is in the top 5 public universities in the country for research. The research opportunities and ability to get published undergrad were a great draws and made their applications to grad school stand out.

thanks everyone. I hadn’t seen the responses until now I wanted to add after mom2collegekids asked: for Brown I would be paying around 20k a year for undergrad, while UF honors would be 5k if anything. Also in terms of advising is one school known to have better than the other?

Would the edge be worth it for, say, 20k a year?

All assessments would be relative, and not absolute. My D had to make just such a choice in UG and chose to take the cheaper route. Was this decision “right”? Would the more expensive route have been “wrong”? I can’t answer that, but I ain’t losing any sleep over it …and she never thinks about it.

IMHO, everyone will view these decisions looking through eyes focused by their own situations and experiences. It’s been 5 years ago, and I still don’t know if her choice to forego the elite UG was “right” . I do know that she made the most of her opportunities after she made her choice and that effort gave her med school choices. I do know that she enjoyed and is proud of her LAC and is happy with her med school and her classmates. That’s just going to have to be enough. lol.

*There are some absolutes to me. If it is financially imprudent, don’t do it. If it’s just painful, that’s where the questioning comes in. If it’s comfortable for your family, then go with the best environment without regard to money. As usual, at the extremes, the decisions come easier.
