Pre-Med at Michigan

Hey everyone. I am a Junior who is very interested in the University of Michigan, and I have some questions with specific regards to the pre-medical program. Please help me out, thanks.

-how competitive is the school, especially the pre-med classes? i want to go to a school that is challenging but not OVERLY challenging. i want to go to a school where kids are generally supportive and collaborative. what is the general curve for the pre-med classes? i am very interested in that.

-how good is the pre-medical program? are the opportunities for research and internships abundant and stuff? i need to be able to do a lot of stuff during the summer and i know that michigan's hospital is one of the best in the entire nation.

-how hard is it to get close with the teachers? with a school as big as michigan is, i'm a little weary about how much attention i can get from a teacher. i would like to be able to connect with some of my teachers.

-how hard is to be able to a study? as a pre-med, i know that i have to do a TON of studying and i am wondering if, with the school being so big and having so many distractions, i can still have a lot of time to study.

1) challenging but not overly challenging. you can find willingful collaboration amongst some pre-meds. but just know… the top intense ones might not be as willing, unless you are a friend.

2) there is no “pre-med” program. but as for preparation, i think uofm prepares its students well. science programs are good.

3) more difficult than smaller lib art schools, but def possible. you’re just going to have to be one of those kids who are always at office hours.

4) there might be distractions. if you are a book worm or are anti-social, you might have the convenience of not having any distractions (people will start to learn you want to be left alone to study). if not, then it’ll be up to you to make the right choices.

I think there is a “Pre-med” major though, because a couple of days ago, when I was filling out my application, I was going through the list of majors, and Pre-Medicine was an option.

No premed major.

Then what major did I choose?

Why would you choose a pre-med major anyway? I know for most schools it doesn’t matter, but I have heard of med schools that do look down on a “pre-med major”. I think you’re probably better of majoring in a real subject like Biology, Neuroscience, or whatever academic subject you are interested in.

The Premed option just indicates to the University that you are seriously considering pursuing Medical studies after you graduate from college. You could major in Business, Chemistry, Engineering, Music, Political Science or Psychology and as long as you take the core requirements for Medical school, you would be “premed”.

what is the competition level at michigan compared to, for example, duke or northwestern? also, what is the difficulty level at michigan compared to those schools. i mean i know all schools will be super hard, but does either school exceed or fall behind the others slightly academically?

I originally chose Cell & Molecular Biology, but when I scrolled down the list I saw Pre-Medicine. Plus it fit perfectly with my essay because I talked about how the major I chose related to me wanting to become a doctor.

It is perfectly fine to choose pre-med as you don’t have to declare a major until your junior year. Pre-med is not a major at any university and you don’t have to be a pre-med to apply to medical school. You just have to fulfill all the “pre-med” coursework requirements. For Michigan, these are: [University of Michigan Medical School :: Admissions :: Requirements](http://med.umich.edu/medschool/admissions/apply/requirements.html)

And you can major in anything you like: [University of Michigan Medical School :: Admissions :: Interview Day](http://www.med.umich.edu/medschool/admissions/apply/profiles.html)

You can do research as a first semester freshman. With a #6 ranked medical school and large research budgets, Michigan offers many opportunities to do research in medical related projects.
