Can you guys give some insight about being pre-med at Ole Miss? I’m a current junior (Class of 2018) intended Chemistry major and Neuroscience minor.
I would like to know about the
Professors
Research opportunities
Grading curve
Homework (daily)
Classes per semester (average)
Difficulty of tests & classes in general (are there a lot of “weed-out” classes?)
If you are not familiar, Ole Miss has the state’s only medical school. So, the opportunities for collaboration there are great. The Honors College has some great options as well. Obviously, faculty members differ greatly across the spectrum of people teaching classes in biology, chemistry, etc. that would be related to a student seeking a career in medicine. Since you are a junior, you could consider some of the summer research programs Ole Miss has to offer if it’s not too late. Lots of the things you list are very subjective to individual professors as well as the subjective experience of individual students. I can tell you that Biology 160 and Chemistry 105 which are the two main courses taken by pre-health students in their first year are regularly rated as some of the most difficult courses on campus.
There is a full office dedicated to assisting students who are seeking a career in the health professions upon graduation. It doesn’t matter what you major in if you are seeking medical school admission. You can major in Engineering, Accounting, English, International Studies, Public Policy… Providing you a number of links below that should address some of your thoughts.
