I am a perspective applicant for Stanford, and I am interested in majoring in economics and applying to medical school. I wanted to know how hard the pre-med courses are at Stanford, and is it true that there is grade inflation? thanks

Stanford does have grade inflation. Pre-med is going to be tough at any top 20 school you go to, so if you’re banking on grade inflation to get a high science gpa, you need set your priorities straight. It bothers me when people want to find an easier route to med school.

Economics at Stanford is a top 5 program if not top 2. They hired the latest nobel laureate away from Harvard and he was a graduate of Stanford.

The classes are large. The grades are curved. So if you expect to be at the top of your class, you are guaranteed an A.

I confused by what people are saying here, especially texaspg.

"The grades are curved. So if you expect to be at the top of your class, you are guaranteed an A. "

There are no guarantees at Stanford. The Economics classes are hard as hell. There’s grade inflation, just like all the other top schools. Theres a good reason too. The reason is this. Kids that attend Stanford are amazing students, and over achievers. It wouldn’t be fair to have 50% of the kids take a class and get a C. Then when it came time for job interviews, who would ever hire the kid from Stanford or Yale? When the kids from University XYZ, had averages of B+. Yet, they were half the student of the Stanford kid. Its hard as hell to do well in Stanford because every kid in the Class is a curve buster. Once again, where normal State schools have only a handful of curve buster per class, Stanford has nothing but that. The competition is ridiculous. So there are no guarantees. There are C’s, D’s and F’s that are given and you have to work your tail off for a B. You will honestly never work so hard in your life!!! Is it worth it? Absolutely!!! Stanford is definitely not the easy route for med school. Again, you are competing with some of the brightest minds in the world for an A in Biology, Physics, Chem, Orgo, etc etc etc…The easier route would be a small LAC.

You can definitely major in econ and fulfill all of your premed requirements. The premed classes are obviously not easy and you can’t rely on grade inflation, which exists to a limited extent.

Thanks for the spirited defense, Dungareedoll. Couldn’t have said it better. My econ major D would love to see some of that grade inflation right about now.
