I was recently accepted RD at Rochester in Arts and Sciences, and I was wondering if there were any pre-med kids at U of R who would be able to tell me how rigorous the courses are. Good grades are going to be really important, and I dont want to find out later that the professors are overly hard, etc. Thanks in advance.

I had a similar question before, and here is what they told me:

Rochester offers better pre-med preparation. The health careers advising at U of R is very active and supportive. U Rochester has a top-20 medical school and nationally recognized hospital adjacent to the campus. There are opportunities to get advice from the medical school admissions office, for research and clinical experience, volunteerism, and so on. Pre-meds have a high rate of acceptance to med school. U of R has a special program that guarantees admission to the med school to top undergrads. They a new biomedical engineering building and a new medical research building. U Rochester is very strong in sciences.

Also, I have asked a bunch of people for their opinions about UR's pre-med, and they all gave me positive comments. ^^

Wow, thanks for the info behappy, that's really good to hear. I just don't want to go to a school that tries to weed out the pre-med kids, like Johns Hopkins (from what I've heard). As long it's possible to do well in the courses if I work hard, I'll be happy.

Are you considering U of R?

yes, I am cos UR sounds very very great for me! the only bad thing of its I heard from others was the weather, but since I am living in upstate NY now, I get used to the heavy snow and cold weather. Nonetheless, I am still waiting for other schools' decisions, but UR is definitely one of my top choices!!

what are the advantages vs disadvantages of either choosing biomedical enginnering or chemistry as my major --i want to go to med school and eventually become a cardiologist...

For biomedical engineering they know you will have a lower GPA, so don't worry. I personally think it is also more dynamic (that is what I am doing at least).

oh. thanks. but, still curious, how low is low? how much lower a gpa can i afford?

hey behappy, what is that special program that guarantees admission to top undergrads or something? (not rems, right)

good question i was wondering if there was a program that allows that, other than rems

sorry! I don't know either because I just copied and pasted what others replied me. Like you guys, I only heard rems that offers this prilvilege. All I can tell you firmly is UR has excellent medical programs ( that's what a friend of my father's said, for he majored in optics over there.)

cause if i'm not mistaken, i remember a family friend of mine who didn't get into the rems program got into some other early assurance program and went to UR's med school. there might be a program like that cause rutgers, for one, has this early assurance program you apply for in ur sophomore year or something at one of their campuses. would be awesome if they had that or maybe, just maybe we should propose that program to U of R...good proposal eh??

I forgot to mention that he also told me if you want to get a good GPA in UR, you have to work so hard! But, I bet everyone who is going to a good and competitive school has prepared for it, right?

suman, I buy your idea!

there is no "special program" at UR that "guarantees admission [to med-school] to top undergrads." There is REMS which guarantees early acceptance into UR med-school to prospective freshmen. The REMS kids have already been chosen at the beginning of this month. What UR does offer to everyone else is a high rate of med-school acceptance and other pre-med benefits you won't find at other schools. http://www.rochester.edu/College/CCAS/health/ApplicationResults05.html
