I want to be a doctor. How is the pre-med program at UCLA compared to other schools??? (I'm in-state for Utexas).

Is there even such a program? I always hear people say "I'm majoring in pre-med!" That makes me think "What happens when you finish that and you fail to be a doctor? What do you do after that?!"

http://www.career.ucla.edu

--> Pre-Health

Well, not much to say. Overachievers. Pre-Meds in general are neurotic. More competition @ UCLA than @ U-Texas. Vague...

If you get into U-Texas Austin, go for it! Great school. In-state tuition. Prominent research university. BLhablbalha. It makes more sense esp if you're going to go to med school and procure even more debt.

There's no premed "program." Pre med is just courses you take that are prerequisites for medical school. Where you go for pre med isn't supposed to matter.

There might be some direct medical school programs though, at least there are for pharmacy. It's like 2 years undergrad and 4 years of graduate (something like that). University of the Pacific has it for pharmacy, don't know about medicine.

And I think UCSD has a direct med program?

I really wish people would stop saying "I am doing pre-med." Pre-med is not a major...to get into medical school you need a certain number of courses (bio, chem etc.) which you can get through any major. You are not "med" anything until you actually get into med school...so stop saying "pre-med." By that logic I can call myself pre-MBA or pre-PHD....you get the point

lots of cute girls doing premed

^Not.

10 mother****ing characters.

UCLA's Medical School isn't that good.

UCLA Medical School =/= "Pre-Med" Program @ UCLA

Oh wow, I thought UCLA Med school rocked.

I don't think dhl3 knows what he is talking about...

yeah, i agree with you

Oh, okay. 10char

premed classes are hard but doable if you study enough

It's a matter of what you think is good or not.
Geffen is #13 in terms of medical school research.

The standards are not as high as Harvard, Hopkins, Stanford, etc. (or even close to) , so I guess there's a little reasoning behind dhl3's statement.

(meaning UCLA is considered 2nd tier to some people)

"(meaning UCLA is considered 2nd tier to some people)"

that is just ridiculous. ive never heard of anything like that before

^ 13 out of what... 150+ schools? That statistic only makes him look even worse (you have to keep this in context like mme-lin was sort of saying... these U.S. medical schools are all kept to very high and strict standards (each one admitting in the ballpark of the mid-100's in their entering classes) and it's not like the undergraduate pool where you can have colleges like bob jones, etc)

Yeah some of UCLA's female MS are fugly

Yeah, I know there isn't a pre-med major. But how much people at ucla actually get admitted to the med school they want to get into??? any info like that.
thanks,

well, about 50% of students at ucla and around the nation get in to a medical school.

theres no percentage for how many students get into the med school they want, but id assume that it is much lower than 50%. some people get into med school although it may not be the one they like

all these percentages can be found on the ucla career center website --> pre-health.
