Pre-med at umn?

Hi everyone! can anyone give any insight as to how well umn prepares students for medical school? If i go to umn, i'll be in the college of biological sciences and the honors program and probably major in biology, and i am wondering if this is a good plan if i want to get into a good med school after college? does the university of mn have a good track record of students being accepted to top medical schools? Thanks!

I can’t tell you actual acceptance rates, but as a current student, it seems like a LOT of CBS students want to go to med school.

I do know (being a pre-med student at the U myself) that our medical school is absolutely top-notch when it comes to biomedical device research. There are definitely lots of opportunities to do research as an undergrad that would, I imagine, be very impressive on a med school application. Also, we have an AMSA-pre-med chapter that helps pre-med students find ways to volunteer around the Twin Cities. For example, we just had someone give us a presentation on volunteering to help at a summer camp for children and teens with muscular dystrophy.

In short, I wouldn’t worry about the University of Minnesota holding you back from attending whatever medical school you wish. It’s all about what you do with your time as an undergrad, and the U definitely has all of the resources you need to form a very impressive med school application.

Also: I don’t know if you’re majoring in biology because you’re interested in it, but if you’re just doing it because it’s a “typical” major for pre-med students, I would consider picking something that will differentiate yourself from all of the other med school hopefuls with biology degrees. If you’re doing it because you love biology though, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.
