I'm wondering if I have a chance to get into pre-med. I have a 3.4 GPA from Freshman and Sophomore years, but junior year I have around a 3.8 GPA with much more difficult classes. I also am in Chess Club, Environmental Club, and Model UN. I volunteer at the local First Aid Squad as well. I will probably get 2200+ on the SAT and 5's on a few AP exams this year. Do I have any chance of getting into an Ivy League School considering my GPA was so low Freshman and Sophomore years, and are my EC's lacking? What is the best school I can probably get into. Thanks.

You named exactly what WON’T get you into Ivys. You need to have an excellent record, and be a well rounded student. The fact that you are only in Chess, Environment, and Model UN Club really show no interest in your intended major. You GPA will avg. out to a 3.53, not that bad, but not enough to get you into Ivys. Sorry. You’d have a decent chance at other good schools w/ good pre-meds (Univ of Wisconsin-Madison, Univ of Illinois, NYU, BU). Good luck

I’m not sure what you mean by I’m only in those clubs. Does it look better on my application if I’m in 10 clubs? Is it better to just sign into 3 clubs a day than stay in just 1? What clubs are directly related to the medical field in school? And I volunteer at the First Aid Squad during which I respond to 911 calls. Does that not show that I’m interested in a medical related field? Don’t colleges look at your improvement and care more about your junior GPA?

No, but it looks good to join clubs or organizations that are related to your intended field. If they don’t exist, you have to be a leader and create opportunities for yourself.

Plenty of colleges do, but the Ivies have plenty of applicants who have stellar academic records throughout their high school careers.
