Hey everyone, I'm an incoming freshman, and I'm wondering what pre-med courses most people take first semester. I'm planning on taking Gen Chem, Calc, French, Intro to Neuroscience, and another class (not yet decided). Should I take bio at the same time, or wait until second semester or later?

That’s a pretty heavy load for a first semester freshman.

I’m keeping med school an option, so that makes me somewhat pre-med for now. leaning away from it though.
likely major BME or neurosci, and also taking french. fun fun.

my plan so far:
definite: chem 218a [4], ES 140 [3], ES 101 [1], math 205a [4] or 175 [3], +
a) french 102 [5], or
b) writing seminar [3] and possibly nsc 201 [3] if math 175

So… 15-17 hours.

Definitely wait till next semester on bio if you’re taking chem and nsc.
If you’re math/science oriented beyond just being pre-med, you’ll be fine with your current schedule.

my advisor said we need to take chem before bio

so i got chem 102 w/labs, physics 121 w/labs, italian 101a, and a FYWS, which ill switch out for multivariable calc next semester

17 hrs, but brutal schedule

Unless they’ve changed the pre-reqs, you do not HAVE to take gen chem before Bio. I took Bio, GenChem, and Calc, and Intro to Sociology my first year. Generally I recommend Bio freshman year (as long as you’re willing to put in the work), but would probably not recommend taking both Neuroscience and Bio your first semester.

^is there absolutely no way to get around taking intro bio, as with chem/phys/calc? like, it’s straight up, the same curriculum as AP Bio. They even use the same textbook.

Nope. You have to take 110a/111a and 110b/111b or 111c

I would say taking bio 110a/110b is vital at Vanderbilt. I took ap bio in high school and did well on the ap test. Last year, I took 110a/110b and it was very difficult and the book is rarely used. The class is much more detailed and molecularly-based than regular ap bio.

hi
just wanted to know if anyone encounter a bad pre med advisor ?or are they all very helpful in terms of helping you with the applicationa and what courses to take while at school?
thanks for any imput
