Pre-med decision

Which has a better premed program Penn State-University or University of Pittsburgh-Pittsburgh?

They are comparable schools, IMHO, whichever is cheaper is better.

I would probably tip the scales to Pittsburgh if you want to get involved in research as an undergrad. But agree w/ artloversplus, they are very comparable schools and you can use other factors to make your decision (college town vs. big city, how far they are from home, etc.)

both are equally far but which one has better faculty and advising?

^^ You’re more likely to get an answer to that question if you ask in the school-specific forums for Pitt and Penn state.

I doubt anyone here knows.

Even if you receive Anecdotal stories in each school specific forum, you still cannot ascertain that one is better than the other. Anecdotal encounters are just that, in such a large school, you will have encounters of your own, some could be good some could be bad. To overcome difficulties is a learning process that everyone has to go through.

I think visiting each school and talk to the specific departments will firm up your mind.

oh ok cool thanks!

When students ask this question it always appears that they don’t understand that being premed is not an occupation major. It’s not like asking, does this school have a good eng’g program, or nursing program, or accounting program.

There isn’t really a “premed program”. The classes are just regular bio, chem, physics, and now psych and socio classes. There will be other STEM students in your classes.

^^

Normally true, except for Penn State (one of the schools mentioned by the OP)
http://science.psu.edu/premed/majorinfo

lol…yes…PSU has a “premed major”…goodness knows why anyone would risk their future with that (imagine putting that on a resume if you don’t go to med school…lol )

Anyway, when I looked over the PSU premed major, it just looks like a normal list of premed prereqs and some logical other courses that may be Gen Ed courses

Basically any bio UG degrees other then bio engineering degrees are useless by itself, they all need advanced degrees or go to a health related grad school. Most of the kids I know graduated from bio depart are either in grad schools of some kind or selling clothing in a retail store.

Was working for J&J labs, entry level lab techs all have PhDs.

lol…this can be quite true. But at least putting Biology as one’s major on a resume for a job sounds a little better than putting Premed <= That sounds like, “wasn’t good enough.”

This is what people planning to be Bio majors need to be cognizant of. People hype STEM but all STEM majors are not equal.
