Hey guys, I'm a rising senior from a top public school in the south. The high school I go to is considered one of the most rigorous in the state and has been named a blue ribbon school a few years in a row. I wanted to know how competitive the pre-med/dent classes are at UMN. My stats:
GPA: 3.8 uw
ACT: 29
Class rank: top 10%
I have SEVERAL leadership positions and ECs which include sports, cultural and language clubs, community service, biology TA, and student ambassador. (There are more.) I have taken college level classes for 3 years. These are not college-prep classes, but are the actually college courses one would take at a university, such as ENG110, BIO101, CL CHEM II, etc.
I would like to know what my chances of admittance are and how the pre-med classes are. Are they cutthroat and competitive? I plan on being a Psychology major. I made the mistake of going to a ridiculously competitive school once, but I do not wish to make that mistake again. I know that you need the best grades possible for medical/dental school.

It depends on what college within the U you applied for.
If you want to go a pre-med/pre-dental route, I suggest applying for the College of Biological Sciences, though it is one of the most competitive undergrad college to get into. It is definitely where all the other pre-med/pre-dental students conjugate though and you get a lot more support.
Psychology is a popular major at the U and it is part of the College of Liberal Arts.
Here are the academic profiles for each college:

I plan on applying to the college of liberal arts. I’m really interested in the Psychology or Biology, Society, and Environment degree. Both are under liberal arts and I see that the average ACT is a 27, but I have a 29.
Anyone else?

Most of that “cutthroat and competitive” stuff is in your head. There are curves for chem and probably bio, and your marks will generally reflect your performance relative to your peers. If you master the material you can expect a good mark.

Your stats look good for CLA admissions (low for CBS).

You can for sure get in CLA. As for CBS you should be able to get in considering you’re out of the reciprocity area. Although your ACT isn’t as high, I think you could get accepted to CBS. If I were you, I’d just apply for CBS and if you don’t get , you’ll probably just be placed in CLA. Good luck!

Almost all of the pre-med students I know are in CLA majoring in Biology, Society, and Environment or physiology or they’re in CBS doing whatever they want since they’re in CBS. CLA is much easier to get into, though. I’m in pre-med and I’m hoping to transfer to CBS from CLA.
