Should i change my major? people telling me to go to Carribean for med school.
What is your cumulative GPA?
Caribbean schools are known to be more forgiving with GPAs, but they still count.
At this point I would focus on improving your GPA, if you can show an upward trend it will still be possible to have a competitive application as long as you have met all of the other expected criteria – volunteering, shadowing, good MCAT score, etc. Talk to an advisor and see if you can space out the remaining required science classes or take some during the summers to raise your science GPA. The med school application system calculates a science GPA and an overall GPA based on a standard method so there will be no way to cover up mediocre core science grades.
If you can improve your sGPA, you can talk to it in your personal essay and say how you are willing to learn from your mistakes and ultimately became a better student. You don’t need to have a 4.0 but you should be in the range of at least 3.5 in order to make it past the initial application review. It is hard to give a set number, other than higher is typically better, but all is not lost if you are only a sophomore, there are so many other things in addition to GPA that comprise a strong application.
