Pre-med for internationals?

Hi!

I wanted to know how competitive is the pre-med program at top schools like harvard, yale, rutgers etc. for international students. Is it more competitive than engineering? And how about financial aid? Do they apply same rules to int'ls as to local students?

And scores? What should be the range of SAT scores etc.?

Thanks!

Flibb: In the USA, there is no pre-med program per se except for a few colleges that have joint Bachelors/MD programs. In the US, students pursue a bachelors degree in whatever subject they choose. Medical schools are post-undergraduate schools. They require MCAT scores, recommendations and a core group of courses to have been taken.

Students who attend HY, Rutgers are focused on their undergraduate degrees. How competitive? Well both H and Y have under 9% accept rates, regardless of engineering or French literature. I don't know about Rutgers.

H & Y both have generous Fin aid for internationals. However, because of this, the competition from internationals is EXTREME. Needless to say, you'll need very high SATs and strong transcripts to be viable.

If you are an international, it is difficult to be admitted to a US med school. You probably would be better off to do med school in your home country, and then come to the US for residency/specialization.

Also, if you are planning to practice in your home country, you probably should do your medical training there. I've heard horror stories of US trained M.D.s who couldn't work in their home countries because of licensing problems, and of others who could get local medical licenses, but didn't have any patients because they didn't have the professional contacts normally formed during the med school years.

You may find some good advice on the Med School Forum. Look for it under Graduate and Professional Schools about half-way down the main College Discussion page.

Thanks all!

I was actually interested in knowing about the undergraduate pre-med major. Well, thanks anyways, I have enough information now!

As noted above, there really is no undergrad "pre-med" major. Pre-med is mainly an advisory program for those undergrads who intend to apply to med school, e.g., you get someone to talk to who will assure you ar taking proper courses, keeping on track, looking for summer jobs in desirable places. In the US, an undergrad can major in virtually anything and then go to med school, although many do major in a science. What a student has to do, regardless of major is take the required courses (math, science, writing) needed to apply for admission to med school after undergrad is completed. As far as admission to "Harvard, Yale, Rutgers, etc." undergrad, you will have no more and no less difficulty getting in than any other student because noting "pre-med" on the app has nothing to do with whether you will be admitted to any undergrad major.

@drusba: That is exactly what I wanted to know! Thanks!
