I will be a freshman at NYU this fall and will be taking General Chemistry, Calc III, my Freshman Seminar, and either WTE or Principles of Bio. I will be majoring in biochemistry, and I saw on the biochemistry website that strong students should take Chem and Bio freshman year. I think I will be able to handle this (I took AP Chem this year and am expecting a 5 on the exam, and also took BC Calc and am expecting a 5, which is why I’ll take Calc III freshman year), but the prehealth office says that the only students who should take Bio freshman year are those majoring in neural science or biology because taking both science courses could lower my gpa. Does anyone have any experience with these courses and could offer some advice on my schedule for freshman year? Would it really be that hard to take Chem and Bio freshman year?
Take bio and chem together! Especially if you have a strong AP Chem background, Gen Chem will be a piece of cake.
@jazzcatastrophe What makes you think the gen chem class will be easy? I’m also an upcoming freshman that wants to take gen chem freshman year.
Because it IS easy. I slept my way through that class (8 AM class didn’t agree with me) after having an excellent teacher for AP chem in HS, and got high 90s on almost every test. To be fair, if you struggled with high school chemistry you might find it more difficult, but it really is a very straightforward class. Halpin is also a generally good professor, and he makes as many resources available as possible
