Pre-Med from the CoE?

Hello Everyone,

How hard is it to maintain a good gpa in majors like ChemE and BME in the college of engineering, and how many students use these majors as pre-med tracks?

Curious if there are any statistics/anecdotes about pursing this course.

A 3.8 like you need for a good med school? Pretty hard in ChemE. BME is competitive because a substantial portion go into Medicine, but the BME classes tend to curve higher so it’s not as bad.

I wouldn’t recommend it, especially if you are completely sure on going to medical school. ChemE and BME are among the hardest majors at Michigan. There is a 3.2 GPA cutoff just to declare BME and getting that in Michigan Engineering is no walk in the park. So if you were to do BME, there will be fierce competition. To get into med school you need at least a 3.8 even for less prestigious schools such as Wayne State in Detroit. Even if you got a 3.5 in BME, someone who got a 3.8 in spanish or psych would be evenly looked at. It’s sad but true

I don’t have much information on your major question, but know that you don’t NEED a 3.8 GPA or higher as stated above. Acceptance is also heavily dependent on MCAT scores.

Recent acceptance percentages: https://www.aamc.org/download/321518/data/2012factstable25-4.pdf

Even with a GPA of 3.0 you still have upwards of an 80% chance of acceptance if you do very well on the MCAT and have decent extracurriculars. And if your race is something other than white, expect that percent to skyrocket.
