Pre-med in Texas colleges Only. Need help in which colleges to apply.

Hi Y’all, I would like to know which Texas colleges can I apply and have a better chance of getting into for pre-med program (Majoring in either Biology/Chemistry/Psychology/Bio-Chem), based on the following info (current scores) and the colleges I am considering applying to in Texas:

Colleges considering: UT Austin, UT Dallas, Texas A&M, Univ. of Houston, Rice and Baylor.

SAT: 1270 (I know it is not a good score. So, I am going to take SAT in October 2018).
ACT: 29 (took ACT again - scores pending).

GPA: 103.78 (my school reports it this way)
Rank: 43 out of 570 students (in the top 8% of the class - TX colleges give automatic admission to students under top 10%)

Achievements:
Treasurer of HOSA in school
President of Texas Area HOSA
Member of NHS
Academic Honor society: 10th to 12th
Career oriented activity: 9th to 12th with officer position at school and Texas state level (HOSA)
Community service: Key club (9th to 12th)
Debate club: 9th
Foreign language club: 10th to 12th
Student government club: 10th to 12th
STEM (Mu Alpha club): 10th to 12th
Music: Violin for 7 yrs. (6th to 12th)
Sports: Basketball - played for the school in 8th

What are my chances if I submit EA or ED for one of the above schools? if so, which one?
My parents can pay upto $35,000 per year.

Thanks y’all for your time.

What about Texas Tech?

University of Oklahoma and University of Arkansas both have arrangements for Texas residents that would bring the cost into your price range. Depending on where you live, both schools could be closer to you than some of the in state schools.

Does Rice give auto admission to top 10%? I don’t recall that it does, and if not, I would consider that school a reach. UT Austin may be a reach since you’re not in the top 6%. The other schools are good matches/safeties.

Will Rice and Baylor fall within the $35,000 price range?

I think Rice is the only school where ED applies. The rest would be EA, which is nonbinding. The others also use the Apply Texas app which makes it fairly simple to get all the applications in early.

Congrats on being in the top 10%. I’m sure you have worked hard, and you’ve done very well!

I think that Texas public universities are auto-admit, not private schools such as Rice. Unless you have some really good admission hooks, Rice is going to be out of reach with your present test scores.

If you want to get into medical school, you need to focus on getting really good grades, good MCAT scores, and good recommendations. The “name” of your undergraduate institution is not a guarantee of medical school admission, by any means.

Run the NPC on Rice to see if it’d be affordable. It’s a reach.
UT is a reach since you’re not top 6% - it may be a bad fit for a pre-med anyway since you wouldn’t survive the weedout (ie you’d need to be top 10% among those it admits to urgice weedout at UT).
Texas tech and Texas State may be possibilities but their pre-med support system isn’t the best. Better odds though if you’re admitted to the honors college at either one.
Add a few colleges where pre-med classes are going to be less weedout - Trinity University, Hendrix, for instance.

I second the additional schools suggested above. I also concur that Rice is a far reach.

Regarding auto admits: UT Dallas and TAMU are top 10% auto-admits, but UT Austin is top 6% for 2019 fall (assuming you are a senior) https://admissions.utexas.edu/apply/decisions

If it were me TAMU…but any school is fine.

LOSE Rice You wont get in.

Here is the med school class for 2021 at UT Southwestern. Look at all those schools in Texas it really doesnt matter fit, gpa, mcat, interview those matter.

Thank you all for your responses. Your valuable suggestions made me narrow down the list and also think of some additional colleges.

@jazzymomof7 - thank you for the positive words. Okla and Ark are too far from where I live, so cannot consider them. Added Texas Tech to my list.

@gandalf78 - Yes, you are right. Rice and Baylor are NOT auto-admit.

@MYOS1634 - Right now with my scores, I understand that Rice and UT Austin are both a reach. I’ve put them on the back burner till I get my latest exam scores. Already discussed with the rep from Rice when he was at our high school. Toured the campus as well. Added Trinity to my list.

@Mwfan1921 - My best bets right now are: UT Dallas, TAMU and UofH

@emptynesteryet - Thank you for the info regarding UT Southwestern and medical schools in general. That link really helps.

Thank you all once again.

Unless you pull up your scores substantially, Rice is out of reach. https://admission.rice.edu/apply/freshman/admission-statistics

Run the Rice net price calculator. Unless you get financial aid, Rice tuition plus room and board is over $60,000/year. Merit scholarships are hard to get.
