This coming Fall, I will start my first year in college. I plan to major in Psychology as it is the subject I am most interested in. But I am having difficulty figuring out what I would do with a Psych degree. A lot of people tell me that a psych degree without a PhD is useless. Should I consider going into Med school? I haven't applied as a pre-med in the university I am going to attend. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I know it may seem a little soon to be thinking this far ahead, but I want to have some sort of plan, even if it is an unlikely one.

In some respects, most liberal arts degrees are “worthless.” :)

Look into you college’s psych program. Do they offer a BS option? Are you interested in something neuroscience?

* I haven’t applied as a pre-med in the university I am going to attend.*

You don’t have to apply as “pre-med”…there is no “pre-med” major. You can major in Psychology and take the 8-10 regular classes (they aren’t special classes) that pre-med students take…

They are…

Bio 2 semesters
Chem 2 semesters
OChem 2 semesters
Physics 2 semesters
Math…1 or 2 semesters

Go to your school’s website and find out which Bio, Chem, OChem courses, it requires/suggests for pre-med students.

OK…you’ll be at U Washington. Note that “1 year” means 3 quarters since UWash is on the quarter system

[Pre-Health Advising at the UW - Medicine](http://www.washington.edu/uaa/advising/prehealth/fields/premed.php)

1 year general chemistry with labs
1 year organic chemistry with labs
1 year introductory biology with labs
1 year general physics with labs
- Although this coursework will meet the requirements for many schools, students should research the prerequisites of the schools to which they hope to apply.

Note: Schools have differing policies for accepting AP, IB or CLEP credits to meet program prerequisites

Scroll down on that page to see suggested course sequence by quarter (in lime green).

P.S. It’s not too early to be considering this because of what you’d be taking your first year…(along with other courses for major)

Autumn Quarter

Chem 142
Math 120
Engl Comp

Winter

Chem 152
Math 124

Spring

Chem 162
Engl

No- it’s not necessary at all.

Since you say “I plan to major in Psychology as it is the subject I am most interested in,” maybe consider opting for the PhD? You’d be delving into a subject that you really enjoy. If you aren’t interested in teaching, you could consider a Psy.D (clinical) [Doctor of Psychology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Doctor of Psychology - Wikipedia)

I absolutely understand where you’re coming from (the fear of a liberal arts degree), but I don’t think that you need to follow a pre-med track because you’re nervous about employment prospects.

Fwiw: there are thousands of unemployed bio majors…
