Hello, I am currently looking at F&M for Pre-Med as I as aspire to become a surgeon. I see that they boast a >90% acceptance rate to medical school, which really attracts my attention. Although, I have heard that certain schools with high acceptance rates like these inflate them by limiting who gets a recommendation from the school. My question is to current or alumni students of F&M who can either negate or affirm that this policy is practiced at F&M. Also, if it is practiced what are the minimum requirements you must have such as GPA or MCAT Score, and how hard is it to achieve those requirements? Thanks in advance.

I know F&M has really great pre-med and pre-law programs. For instance they have their own student run Emergency Medical Services on campus which you can read about if you just gewgle it, but I guess that doesn’t really answer your question… My educated guess though is that they (students and faculty) simply put a lot of effort in the pre-med program and that is why they have so high acceptance rates to medical school. Hope it helps to some extent!

I’m a current pre-vet student at F&M. In years past it was just as difficult to get a letter of recommendation as you suspect. The pre-healing arts advisor was a fill-in who let the power go to his head and gave few recommendations. Last year F&M brought in a new advisor, who, from what I’ve witnessed, is a lot better. I’m sure there is still some limitation, though. However, the largest limitation is the pre-med coursework. F&M is a HUGE weed-out school, especially when it comes to chemistry courses. It is not unusual to have 50% of students in a chemistry course drop out of the class. In fact, that is quite the norm for general chemistry and organic I. Fewer people drop intro biology courses, but it is not uncommon. I once heard that about half of students in incoming classes declare themselves pre-med, but a comparative few actually apply to medical/veterinary/dental school. I agree that pre-med should be difficult, but it often feels like F&M wants pre-meds to fail. It is a little disheartening. Sorry to be such a downer! Hope this helps.
