Can I choose a pre-med major for nursing ? there is a school i want to go to and i want to do nursing, but they do not have a nursing major, but instead Pre med.

there is no such thing as a “pre med major”. Pre-med is a label you give yourself, indicating you plan on taking the 10 or so courses required to be eligible to apply to med school. Students who are pre-med can major in anything from Anthropology to Zoology.

edit: there might be a handful of schools that actually offer a major called “pre-med” but it is rare and not needed for applying to medical (or nursing) programs.

You need to go to a school with nursing. Taking the pre-med pre-reqs will NOT make you a nurse. Taking the pre-med pre-reqs allows you to apply to med school after you graduate. Becoming a nurse is done while you’re an undergrad.

BTW…very few schools (maybe one or two) have a “pre-med major.” Pre med students major in anything they want and take the premed prereqs, and then apply to med school.

mom2, good catch. I was thinking the OP wanted to take the requirements to apply to a nursing school in college, not that “majoring in pre-med” would make her/him a nurse

the first post is confusing. Without a nursing school on the desired school’s campus, the student won’t become a nurse.

To get a BSN, the first two years is spent doing the pre-reqs, and then the second two years are spent doing clinicals. The student graduates with a BSN.

A pre-med student graduates with just a degree in his major. He’s not prepared for any medical career at that point.
