I was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on which would be a better place for pre-med study - NYU or Lehigh?

Thanks!

The NYU diploma will get your farther than the Lehigh. While the education you receive at both will be good, saying that you graduated from NYU will mean more to med school admissions boards then from Lehigh. Regardless however your grades are the most important factor.

I disagree...for undergraduate sciences leading to medical school, I would choose Lehigh.

you can't honestly believe that a Lehigh diploma is as good as an NYU. 99.9% of patients will see a doctors diploma from NYU and know how good that school is. The same can't be said for Lehigh. These things do factor into admission decisions

We are talking pre-med here. Lehigh doesn't have a medical school, so obviously, I'd be a little apprehensive about a "Doctor" with a Lehigh medical degree on the wall. But yes, for undergraduate sciences leading to medical school, Lehigh, IMO, is equal to or better than NYU. So we disagree about this. But I do agree that it will come down to the student, as either school will get you into a top-flight med school if you do well.

NYU is the top feeder into New York Medical schools and NYU medical school which is awesome. Lehigh has no such stats. I don't see how your position but I do agree that a good student will have no trouble getting in.

Lehigh has nearly double the placement rate into AAMC medical schools as the national average...so, although a much smaller school than NYU, don't dismiss it so lightly.

According to the admissions office when i talked to them, 75-80% of the NYU students applying to med school is accepted to a med school. just to let you know

and since the national average for students accepted to med school in the nation is 50% i dont see how lehigh can be double it.

In 2003, Lehigh's acceptance rate was 88%...I believe the national average was 47%.....hence my comment about "nearly double". I only am posting this because the response to the original question had a cavalier dismissal of Lehigh as second-rate, and that is simply untrue. NYU is a fine school in many areas (especially Stern), but Lehigh has many fine programs too.

I certainly take the 88% Lehigh figure with a big grain of salt, because in reality no school (even HYPS) has perfect med school placement.

Some things to consider when analyzing med school placement:

Do these figures include all pre-meds or just some (for example, NYU's med school placement for those with over a 3.5 gpa is 100%, but this is not the general pre-med population since not everyone breaks this threshold)???

Do the placement figures include just American allopathic schools (ie those granting the MD) or do they also include placement into D.O. schools and offshore med schools which are much easier to get into?

What's the weed out rate from pre-med courses?? Sure a school can have 95% med school placement if they weed out all but the brightest kids from pre-med classes so only a few geniuses with high gpas (and probably high MCATs) are left applying. In addition to looking at placement, one should also look to the pre-med size of a school and see how many are even given the oppotunity to apply.

All good points jwblue. I'm just trying to make the point that Lehigh is especially strong in sciences and engineering....and has a good track record of placement into med schools, and really does not take a back seat to NYU in that regard...as was implied in the initial response. The schools are so different that I would assume a prospective student would have many, many other reasons to choose one over the other aside from minor differences in med school placement rates.

The question was which would be better for med school placement, NYU or Lehigh. NYU has a med school, has better stats than Lehigh for amount of students placed into med school, I don't understand what the debate is about.

my cuz is on admissions at mt sinai and doesnt even like candidates from top name schools...he thinks they r too arrogant because of their diplomas, best docs he says r the ones who clawed their way up from the lower schools like Queens College
