Hi there- as far as I know (and things could be different now from when I was a student)-- I don't think it's too hard to be "accepted" into pre-med and start taking pre-med classes-- not much harder than actually getting into HC in the first place. And, you can always start taking math and chemistry your first year and apply for pre-med in the spring. The selectivity part comes in later on, based on whether or not the pre-med committee approves your decision to apply to med school... that's more based on your coursework at HC than your high school record. A lot of people start off as pre-med (probably 100 or more), but I would guess less than half actually end up going to med school... Many find out they actually don't want to go to med school, but a few probably don't meet the approval of the committee. As long as you work hard, get good grades and are passionate about becoming a doctor, I think you'll be fine. Don't stress out before you even get to college! Good luck.

D is currently a freshman pre-med at HC. I'm not sure how selective program is, but she has mentioned friends there who got into HC but NOT into pre-med program. They plan to apply to the program again. I know that the freshman pre-med required classes fill up quickly, so I'm not sure how much space is left for non pre-meds. I think the biology program (major) is also selective at HC, so maybe a student who majors in something other than biology would have a better chance at the pre-med program.
