Pre-med questions

Is it better to take the calculus-based physics or the general algebra-based physics in college to do better on the physical sciences portion of the MCAT?

Which college looks better as far as getting into medical school, Vanderbilt or UNC-Chapel Hill? I'm transferring as a sophomore. I know Vanderbilt is probably more prestigious but is it head and shoulders above?

I think that at UNC I will be able to get a higher gpa and there will be more opportunities for research and comm service, although at both universities I would make sure to take care of all 3 of those things but I doubt I'd have as much time for research and comm service while getting a 4.0 at vanderbilt if I can even manage that. My dad thinks that Vanderbilt's prestige will matter alot more in the med school process though if I can get the same gpa at both. I've found that UNC generally allows much more undergraduates to get involved with research, while its more a student-to-student basis at Vanderbilt maybe. There also seems to naturally be more service opportunities at UNC due to many more organizations but Nashville prob counteracts that; it'd just require more individual work in Nashville since it wouldn't be through the college. Is any of what I'm saying accurate?

How are the pre-med programs at both schools as far as preparing a student for the MCAT? If anyone has any advice or any insight about either school individually or in comparison, I'd really appreciate it. I already visited both but still having a difficult time making a decision.

Any input at all to any of the questions. I'm obviously not going to base my decision based on something in this thread, but any opinions are always good. Do you think the difference in academic prestige between unc and vanderbilt is negligible or a decent point in med school admissions?

Calculus-based physics won't help you on the MCAT.

ummm....

I'm out.

"Calculus-based physics won't help you on the MCAT."

If it was crucial -or necessary, for that matter- you'd have to take it as part of your preparation. So, I have to back up the statement, here. Talk to your premed advisor, and read what I told you on a different thread.:)

I took the MCAT too long ago to remember whether calculus based physics is needed, check with your premed advisor.

I doubt that any perceived difference in reputation between Vanderbilt and UNC could possibly matter in med school applications. I am not sure I even agree that Vanderbilt has a better reputation, but any difference is way too small to have any effect. Med schools care about how you do in college much more than where you go.
