Hi,
I’m a pre-med student and have been accepted into both the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and George Washington University. My goal is to end up at med school (or a DO school- I honestly have no preference). At my undergraduate school, I plan on majoring in something in the social sciences or humanities (sociology, finance, international relations, etc.)
I’m having a dilemma choosing which school for pre-med. Cost is not an issue, and I LOVE both campuses and programs that they offer. On one hand, UMich has excellent research and alumni connections, which may be useful in the future, but on the other hand GWU is in the amazing city of D.C. so I’m guessing there would be lots of internship opportunities for me there (as compared to Ann Arbor, a pretty small and quiet town). I’m also not so sure about GWU’s research opportunities available in the STEM field. I know that GWU has an early selection program, but it’s crazy competitive, so I’m not getting my hopes up.
If anyone could provide any insight (how easy it is to maintain a good gpa, how many undergrads from those schools get into med school, anything!!!), it would be greatly appreciated. The deadline to submit the enrollment deposit is like a week away and I need help!!!
^^ I think my main dilemma revolves around the location of both schools - GWU has hospital right on campus and UMich does too, but it’s a bit farther away. I’m just afraid that I’ll be missing out on something big if I don’t go to D.C. (opportunites, city life, etc.) and go to Ann Arbor but idk
Take pre-med out of the equation…now which school would you pick?
What’s your Plan B if med school doesn’t work out? (And for most pre-meds, it won’t) Which school offers you better Plan B career options?
Some notes–
STEM research isn’t the be-all, end-all high schoolers think it is when it comes to med school. Most med schools outside of the the highly competitive research-intensive schools don’t care if you have any research. Med school adcomms are more interested in your other ECs–community service with the disadvantaged, clinical volunteering, physician shadowing, leadership.
Pre-med at Michigan is extremely competitive with lots of weeding going on in intro level classes. I’d imagine it’s the same at GW.
Plenty of on-campus internship recruiting happening at UM.
My plan B is the degree humanities (at this point, I’m most leaning towards intl relations), with a career hopefully in the state department. Although I know that DC is the hub for these things, I would probably plan on coming back to Los Angeles
I know 2 young people who have made careers in the US Foreign Service. Neither went to college in DC. (One graduated from UOklahoma–which is about as far away from DC as you can get.) The commonality-- a high level of fluency in a critical foreign languages (Russian, in both their cases ) plus substantial experience living overseas in in Russia or former Soviet Union countries.
I can assure you that UM’s hospital is right on campus. Plus there is a campus shuttle service which has several stops at UM hospital & medical buildings. (D2 spent 2 years working at UM’s med school before she started med school. She used to ride the shuttle/city bus every day to work. She got dropped off right in front of the one of the hospital entrances.) Her BF was doing his PhD in bio and all the bio buildings are right across the street from the hospital. So is one of UM’s dining halls. The hospital isn’t on the central campus, but the medical buildings are an awful lot closer to central campus than the north campus and many of the dorms are.
Thanks! I’m really leaning towards UMich at this point, and I really appreciate the insight!
One word of warning, though. AA will feel awfully cold to you after living in LA. You’ll need warm boots and well insulated coat to make it through the winter.
Your parents will pay for college and medical school without any problem?
um no…
i got good financial aid and scholarships from both, so cost is the same
