Pre med schools. Please help!

I am Austin. I am looking for pre med schools to look into. I am asking for your help. I am looking for prestigious schools that will give me the best opportunity to get into med school. I live in Iowa and have read Iowa is a pretty good pre med school even though its really not a "prestigious" school. Any schools are great and if you could include whether they are matches, safeties, or reaches that'd be great too!

31 ACT
FOOTBALL & track 4 years (captains both 12 grade)
Baseball 5 years (captain 11 & 12 captain)
160 volunteer hours
Started own business (only during summer, 7k/summer)
Male
White
Middle class
4.0 GPA

If you can afford UI and ISU (see their net price calculators on their web sites), and your stats meet the [Admission to Iowa’s Regent Universities: Regent Admission Index](Regent Admission Index | Board of Regents State of Iowa) threshold, then these should be safeties.

Other safeties can be found here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-16.html#post15557250</a></p>

Medical school admissions first cut is mostly about college GPA and MCAT score. College prestige is generally thought to have little or no impact, as long as it is a four year school.

Hi,

first of all, there’s no such thing as “pre-med schools”.

U of Iowa and Iowa St are fine for a student who wants to go to med school. The pre-med pre-reqs aren’t unique. They’re classes that all universities offer…bio, chem, ochem, physics, etc. The STEM majors take those classes as well.

Medical school admissions first cut is mostly about college GPA and MCAT score. College prestige is generally thought to have little or no impact, as long as it is a four year school.

Very true.

Going to a 'prestigious" undergrad isn’t necessary.

What do you want to major in?

Will you be taking the MCAT again? You should. A score boost would be good. also take the SAT.

YOu need to ask your parents how much they’ll spend each year.

I see in other threads that you’re looking for merit. Some schools give merit, some give more than others. UF, won’t give you much or anything. UF accepts very few OOS students, and its merit aid is mostly for instate students thru Bright Futures.

An OOS public like UF costs about $40k per year.

HOw much merit do you need?

For instance, if your parents will pay $15k per year, then you’d likely need a full tuition scholarship so that the $15k can go towards room, board, fees, books, transportation, misc.

Use the merit scholarship link above to find what you need.

I’ll echo the advice you’ve already been given. And quote from the excellent advice on the Amherst premed guide

I suggest you take the time to read thru the who guide so you have a better understanding of what the process entails – its at [Amherst College Guide for Premedical Students](Amherst College Guide for Premedical Students)

Based on your accomplishments and the fact that you’re interested in going into medicine, I’d say College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA would be a really good fit for you!
