Hi everyone. I have searched college confidential a lot for the information regarding clusters..but even after all the threads i've read..i just want some insiders on whether it'll be worth it to take a cluster..I know it takes care of honors credit which is great..but in terms of the work load difficulty...how hard would chem, a math course, and a cluster be? i was thinking of history of modern thought..most pple on this website seem to agree that hmt is really hard...but is it hard cuz of the reading or is an A feasible?

i know it also depends on the level of interest on the cluster and i'm moderately interested in that clusters...so

HMT has a heavy reading load compared to other classes and GEs. If you took an AP English class in high school and did well (and liked it), you’ll be fine.

just dont take it. GEs are supposed to be easy A courses. clusters are not. you can easily do honors chem if you want honors credit. lavelle will offer an extra hour per week section for honors if you want to take it.

Most of the people I know dropped out of their clusters because it basically wasn’t worth it. I think the only benefit is just meeting people and staying with them throughout the year, and then you guys are suffering so then you guys become closer.

It was more worth it when they had the second Writing II/Seminar requirement. Now that they dropped that, there’s not much incentive for a cluster unless you are REALLY interested in it.

My daughter took the Global Environment Cluster last year as a freshman. She really liked it. She found the subject interesting, liked having the same students/profs for the year and got lots of GE’s out of the way and earned lots of honors credits (she is in the Honors Program). She got an A in the class. She is not doing a science/math major so it will help her in that she now only needs one more science GE. IF the Cluster is out of your major area and you genuinely are interested in the subject than it is a good idea. Don’t take one in your major area as there will be too much overlap with classes you have to take anyway. If you don’t really enjoy the subject than it would be better to hand pick each GE you take.

HMT is lots of reading but no more work than an AP HS class. If you are a science/math major than it could be good in broadening your world and giving you the opportunity to take classes you might nt on your own.
