Hi I am currently majoring in neuroscience at Rutgers University. I was wondering what were the different kinds of things freshmen do that enable them to greater their chance of getting into medical schools e.g. activities like volunteering. I am trying to start boosting my resume and learn about things students wish they did or completed as a freshmen. Thank you!

First advice: don’t do things for the sake of only boosting your resume. Do activities that you love—that you are passionate about.

i realize that. i want to actually experience what its like working in a hospital and talking to patients. or just research is interesting to me too

if you want to increase your research opportunities, take intro to stats as soon as possible

^^Also MatLab. Everybody uses it for data analysis.

I’m sure there are volunteer opportunities at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital or St. Peter’s. Someone at Rutgers might know or you could call the volunteer office at either hospital.

Most important - take care of academics. Your GPA is about 50% of your chance. And while you are doing so, you are increasing your MCAT score (close to another 50%). Also, be open to opportunities. Look what kind of volunteering is available, match it to your personal area of interest. Right now you main focus is to get adjusted to your new life. After you start getting your A’s and know the time commitment for them, look around and follow your own heart. Your own preferences/passion is the most important.
