I am in need of a little guidance. When I first began my college career (I'm a freshman), I had plans to become a lawyer. Then, I decided to switch my major to Biology, because I really want to be a doctor. I transferred to my local CC and am now taking Intro to Bio, English 102, Western Civ. I, Intermediate Algebra, and Principles of Sociology. I have already applied to colleges for the fall 2011 semester. I am now waiting for the decision letters.

The thing is, I have no idea what I am doing. I want to take Chemistry over the summer, because I feel really behind as pre-med student. I currently have no one to help steer me in the right direction (my advisor can't provide much help). Should I take the Chemistry class over the summer? Will the fact that I took science(s) courses at a CC hurt my medical school admission?

Also, I feel behind in terms of medical internships/research/volunteering. I hear most pre-med students are doing internships and research around this time.
What do I need to do to get myself on track?

A discussion of premed requirements can be found here:

Based on your current course selection, I’m guessing that you were not a math-science person in HS. So yes, I recommend Intro Chem this summer, assuming it’s roughly equivalent to a HS honors chem course. Then you could take Chem 1-2 next year along with Bio 1-2. You should also consider PreCalc/Trig at the same time, assuming that is the next math in succession at your college after Inter Algebra. Make sure you take transferable courses.

Research will likely have to wait until you take some college-level math/science courses. (Otherwise, you won’t be of much value to the Professor.) You can become involved in volunteer activities, however, preferably medical/social service related.

You also need to double check the grad requirements for your AA.

Organic Chem and Physics can be taken at your four-year college, perhaps with an upper division Bio course (to demonstrate your science strength to adcoms).

Adcoms understand that not everyone is rich enough to attend a four-year college.

Not everyone applies to med school as a senior in college, so you don’t necessarily need to complete all of the prereqs in four years. It is still possible, but it will require some careful planning, and depend on your major requirements once you transfer to a four-year school.

Good luck.

In high school, I completed four years of math and science with labs. I’m terrible at standardized tests, so when I took the math placement test I was placed in Intermediate Algebra even though my math skills exceed the course.

Thank you very much for the help. So, I will take the Intro to Chem course.
