So as of now I'm 50/50 between these schools, the reason I'm considering UCSD is because I've been hearing scary stories about the competition at LA. My major is psychology B.S. for UCSD and psychobiology for UCLA. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

psychobiology BS incorporates the pre-medical required classes into its lower divs, psychology doesn’t unless you take some complementary classes to fill then.

I don’t think you will face less competition at UCSD then UCLA…especially for pre-med classes, both schools are crazy competitive. (though the different majors might make one school tougher)

Both school are intense if you want less premed comp go to a lesser UC prestige does not matter for medical school

I have the same exact issue. I feel like I would do well at UCSD because I know the grades my friends are getting and from that I’m quite certain about the grades I would get in their classes. However at ucla, Im absolutely terrified of the competition

good to know im not the only one, anyone have an opinion?

There are so many different factors that affect college grades that I would not try to predict them through high school grades. Like with the SAT, many students can unexpectedly step up to the plate when they choose to. Also, the college learning environment is so different from the highschool one. The material also becomes more difficult and some “hardworking” students are left behind despite being former stars.

If I were really being safe, like the other poster said, I would shoot much lower than UCSD. UCLA vs UCSD would definitely not be giving up enough. I’d advise at least Irvine or maybe even a CSU or an unprestigious private offering you a big scholarship if you want to be sure to have that GPA for med school. The top chunk of UCSD students often had the option to come to UCLA.

Honestly I think ucla is going to be alot more competitive and I’m saying this because I have alot friends at ucsd and they all tell me classes there are easier than in high school ( I went to a really competitive hs). I think you’ll fond competition everywhere but I think la kids just don’t complain as much…

There are numerous times when I wish I went to an easier undergrad for premed. And there are kids here that drop out from it because they’ve been getting c’s in all the science classes that would otherwise still be premed at like Davis or irvine for example… Handful of these…

Hi guys and gals,

I know this post is a few weeks old but I thought I would give my two cents. I am completing my sophomore year and thus have completed most of my pre-med requisites. All of my friends and I feel the same way about “competition”. That is, it is simply overrated! If you guys truly want to become doctors than going to a school like UCSD or UCLA is in your best interest! If you have to go to a “lower UC or CSU” to get good grades than maybe Medical School is not a realistic goal.

If you truly study hard, attaining a gpa greater than 3.7 at UCLA or UCSD is not that hard!

Good luck
