Pre-med. Where should I go? cornell, UChicago,hopkins,university of Maryland.Thanks!

I will appreciate any advice!!!

this may sound weird but i say maryland because for medical school prestige does not matter at all. it is cutthroat at JHU, UCHicago, and cornell because these are the top schools in the nation. at maryland you can get a high gpa so you might be able to go to a prestgious medical school.

here’s an analogy: going to from Maryland to Harvard Medical School looksbetter than going from Harvard to Maryland Medical School.

the reason i say this is that if you go into academic medicine it only matters where you went to medical school, nobody cares what undergrad school you went to. And i know sometimes that if people go to a less prestigous medical school they try to justify it by saying that they went to a good undergrad.

hypothetical conversation:

Person 1 “Where did you go to medical school at doctor”
Person 2 " I Went to Harvard Medical School"
Person 3 " Wow"

Conversation number 2
Person 1"Where did you go to medical school at doctor"
person 2 " i went to wayne state… but i went to Yale for undergrad"
person 3 " ok…"

^^^^
no offense to Wayne state i was just trying to make a point

the above is just an example that if you have a choice between a good state school versus a really prestigous school go to the state school and get a high gpa. its better to go to a prestigous medical school than prestigous undergrad. well of course the best thing of course is to go to a prestigous undergrad and medical school but that would take so much work.

thanks! any other opinions?

im stuck between cornell and hopkins for BME. and i got into JHU’s BME program. and CU only has BME as a minor but i could do grad at JHU and do just chem eng at CU.

Ahhhhh!
so stressful, i know.

good luck tho.

Sure the GPA is one of the most aspects of Medical School admissions, however if you are smart enough that you got into JHU, Chicago, and Cornell. I am pretty sure you will do very well in those universities. First of all go where you have always wanted to attend, so even if you are extremely smart and you’ve always wanted to attend Maryland then you should go there. However, the prestige of your undergraduate college actually does play a big role in Medical school admissions. If you are planning to apply to (for example) Harvard would take most students from Harvard, then most like students from MIT, Yale, JHU, etc. while they might only take maybe 1 if not any from Maryland (Not saying Maryland is a bad school at all). So prestigious schools send more students to well known med schools. It is proven, if you look at some medical school admission stats.

well. to be honest, my top choice was stanford and I was rejected. at this point none of these are really places I have wanted to go to. I’m looking at the best place to go for pre med.

also. collegematter, what makes you say undergraduate institution matters? it’s so split up, b/c i have heard a lot that undergraduate institution doesn’t matter.

UG institution is about as important as the color of your underwear. In most cases, it simply doesn’t matter…

collegematter: so how do you explain these Harvard Medical School Grads from UC Davis and believe every year UC Davis admit 10-20 people in the top 10 medical schools.

also on mdapplicants the Harvard page shows a mix of Ivy league schools, State schools, and relatively low tier schools. to say that just because you go to prestigous school it will be easier to attend a prestigous medical school is proposterous. for example a 3.5 at JHU will be beaten by a 3.8 from UC Davis provided MCATs are the same and EC’s are relatively alike.

let me say it again: GPA and MCAT count the most no matter where you came from.

P.S.- If you had the choice what would you rather have a prestigous Medical school or prestigous undergrad?

alright. thanks for all your opinions. I’m getting god feedback! any other suggestions?

Well, I’d go with what god says. But, if that was a typo  , I’d say go where the fit line and the money line cross most favorably.

lol. typo!

Well bottom line is med school will look to see where you went for undergrad as well because they will take into consideration that your school was prestigious or not. Plus if you attend prestigious school and you apply for higher ranked med schools they will know the admissions better which will definitely help.
However, most importantly the thing you have to really consider snowy435 is where you want to attend the most because if you attend somewhere just for the sake of pre-med and you dislike the school your grade will suffer (a lot) so I say visit the campus and see which one you like the best.

Sorry, “prestige” has nothing to do with it. Go ask LizzyM (the wise adcom mentor of SDN). What she would tell you is that students at HYPS 1) are usually stronger to begin with and 2) may have opportunities to work with well-known researchers; however, if students don’t take advantage of those (and only a limited number can as there are only so many research labs and slots for UGs), you’re probably going to do worse than you would have elsewhere (because curves may be tougher). A 4.0 from UCSD>>>3.5 from HYPS (all else held constant).

well, being very honest, at this point i am in love with uchicago…but on the other hand I amd ABSOLUTELY SET on being a doctor and going to a top noch med school…and what i’m being hearing about uchicago and pre med = brutal and terrible and impossible to get into a good med school…

knowing this…i don’t know what to go with. the logic of not going to chicago or going there b/c i would fit there and love it?..>.< what would you do?

Go there. If you love it, go there. And then be prepared to work your butt off.

Go to Chicago. You will do fine. Chicago’s brutality is EXTREMELY exaggerated on these boards. While people on CC are talking about Chicago’s grade deflation, I overhear (and sometimes participate) in conversations about how easy it is to get good grades at Chicago.
