<p>Pre-med is just an advising category. There are only a few schools that have an actual pre-med major.</p>
<p>For the most part pre-med is the set of courses nearly every medical school requires and those that are necessary (according to the AAMC) to adequetly prepare you for the MCAT.</p>
<p>They are as follows:</p>
<p>1 year of Bio, gen chem, physics and organic chem
1 year of english</p>
<p>Those are pretty much universal EVERYWHERE.</p>
<p>Most also require at least one semester of calc. If there is a requirement for a year of math, the second semester usually can be a stats course. Harvard is the only school that I've seen require 2 semesters of Calc.</p>
<p>Classes in Biochem and genetics are required at some schools. You need to look into schools that you are interested in applying to, in order to see their requirements. However, the courses that you might need to take are all upper level classes, so you have some time to figure out what you need to take.</p>
<p>So no, you wouldn't have to be in a pre med program in order to go to medical school. A lot of people wouldn't be doctors if that was true. =)</p>
