Pre-Medical Studies at the UCs

Hey guys, I’m rising senior and I plan on majoring in Biology and doing pre-medical studies. I was wondering which UCs have the best pre-medical programs and what is it that makes them better than the other UCs or other universities in general?

UCD, UCI, and UCSD have great programs-UCD has its own College of Biological sciences, and is ranked #20 jn the US for it. UCSD generally has a high number of declared pre-meds. So does UCI. Both schools have competitive Biology programs. i’m not too sure about the other UCs.

As a backup, UCR has a thriving pre-med program. It’s set to open its medical school in 2013(ish, pending accreditation) and has lots of benefits for pre-med students, including shadowing programs with hospitals in the Inland Empire, a Future Physician Leaders mentor program, loads of pre-health student organizations, and health professions advisers.

UCR’s biology major is pretty popular and competitive, but since the campus offers one of the only pre-health programs in the area, you’ll have a lot of opportunity for hands-on involvement.

I really recommend touring UCD, UCI, UCSD, UCLA, and UCR and looking into what they offer for students interested in pre-med.

UCSD lets you be a TA as an undergraduate. It’s a really good way to boost your ECs, get to know a prof really well (rec letters), feel like a badass, and make a bit of money on the side.

I don’t think any other UCs would let you write half the final for an upper div bio class :).
