I'm a high school senior who will be going to SUNY Plattsburgh for pre med. Do you guys think that Plattsburgh is good for pre med. I will also be in the Honors Program. Do you think the Honors Program will enhance my application for Medical School.
I want to major in Nutriton while taking my pre med reqs because that is my favorite subject and i believe i can get a 4.0 gpa with it, it is my passion. do you think thats a good idea?

Do NOT major in nutrition.

why though?

Medical schools want you to spend college learning about something other than medicine. Once you enter med school, you will have medicine literally crammed down your throat. College is for learning how to think, not what to think. That’s why vocational majors are generally discouraged.

And if you are interested in nutrition, you will probably find med school pretty disappointing. There’s not much nutrition in the curriculum. I can name you all the features of Kawasaki Disease but I can’t tell you the daily requirements for saturated fat.

Why don’t you just take classes in nutricion. Many pre-meds (looks like most in my D’s UG had minor(s) or double/triple majors in completely unreleated or somewhat related to medicine fields of their interest. It is great that you have a passion, pursue it in UG, but you do not need to major in it, do not even need to declare minor or major, just take classes.

If you want to find out what is the best path to take…, then call around to some med schools/ask to speak to an ac and see what THEY say! I agree that nutrition is probably not the best thing to major in when you get to collge…you must think of all the other applicants that you will be up against… and what their majors will be… also, there is a book that Kaplan has on B+N… I think the title is… “How to Get Into Med School” or something to that effect… I have the book on my NOOK and it is quite informative.

I spoke to an ac @ a med school in MA and here are the numbers that we discussed… almost 8,000 applicants for this years incoming med school class… and only 167 were selected… that is quite competetive…maybe we are wrong…I can’t really say… but your best bet… it to take the time to call as many med schools as it takes in order to get a good sense if you are headed in the right direction…I am sure it will be worth your time!
