So HMC is a really bad choice for pre-meds. Med school admissions don't account for schools with a reputation for grade inflation (or the lack of). Correct?

This is just my opinion. I know that HMC has special academic counselors for premeds and I know that some HMC students go on to medical school.

If you end up with a 3.5 or better from a school like HMC then you will probably get into any medical school in the country. No doubt you will ace your MCAT's, and you will have done some great research which the top medical schools love to see.

However, getting C's is something that will be a problem for med school admittance, in my opinion.

just ace the MCAT.

my brother went to USC for undergrad, got a 39 on the MCAT, then went on to WUSTL for med school. albiet he had mostly A's, if i remember correctly, med schools were more impressed with his MCAT score.

plus, if you are looking for the easiest way to becoming a doctor, you shouldn't be a doctor. hands down, places like harvey mudd will produce much more competent doctors than say, USC, UCLA, Cal, WUSTL, etc. i say go for the learning and in the process, let med schools know that is the route you chose to take.

I'm not looking for the easiest way to become a doctor. I just don't want it to be impossible.

Thanks for the advice.

Cool. Then in that case, find some place that really clicks with you and you feel matches your learning style the most. Don't go for the name, just look at what the school has to offer and ultimately what kind of education you'll get out of it.

I hope I didn't discourage you too much.
Have a nice holiday season.

Contact the college and ask for information about medical school application success. It is a small school, so the number and percent accepted each year will vary, but they should be able to tell you things like
average MCAT for applicants and accepted students
average overall gpa and BCPM gpa for applicants and accepted students
overall school gpa for all students

You want to hear that the overall gpa for all students is about the same as for sucessful med school applicants. This would mean that an average HMC student is a good candidate for medical school. If the gpa of admitted students is substantially higher than that of studnets as a whole, that means you would have to be among the better students to have a reasonable chance of getting in medical school. Given the academic abilities of the students at Harvey Mudd, that is a tall order.

The typical elite LAC will show the vast majority of applicants get admitted to med school, with gpa's about average for the college.
