Pre-orientation/calculus

i know a lot of colleges have orientation type programs where the kids go for a week to check it out and pick classes. This done well in advance of the orientation. Does Brown have one? Also, if I’m a premed got a 4 on the Calc AB exam which calc should i start out with. Is it better to take calc 1 and 2 or just take 2 and get the credit for 1?

Nope, there's no pre-orientation.

You can take a calc placement exam when you get here, I think, to see which calc you'd be most comfortable with.

According to http://www.math.brown.edu/~jhs/CalcPlacement.d2.htm , you should take MA17, Advanced Placement Calculus. If you're not comfortable with math, though, I'd recommend MA9 followed by MA10.

You should definitely start with 10 or 17, I think all they cover in 9 is derivatives.

i'm going to be a premed, though, so all i need is calc 1 and 2. is it ok to take math 17 and not take math 9 cuz i get credit? will medical schools care? how is calc 3 (math 18-20) manageable or useless if i'm not majoring in math?

Dude, such stuffs aren't worth your time.... When you came to brown, talk to your advisor or Meiklejohn. Besides, that's what shopping period is for. Btw, pre-reg at brown is a joke unless you are trying to get into a seminar.(which none of the courses above qualify as)

PS: Shopping period is the first 2 week of your semester where you're allowed to add/drop any classes you want.

profanity's words are wise. Don't worry about it until you get here.
