Hey, I just got the whole brochure about the Leading Edge, Volunteer Venture, and Appalachian Adventure programs from W&L and was just wondering if any of the current students could tell me if they went on any of the programs and whether or not they liked them and would recommend them to incoming freshmen. I think I would definitely like to do one, I just don't know which. Thanks.

All of the programs are absolutely amazing and are highly recommended by everyone who has gone. I still regret not going last year (it interfered with a family vacation)

How much do these trips cost? I want to do one, but I noticed there was no price listed on the pamphlet.

when do they happen and for how long?

If I remember right, trips cost something like $175. They're not too expensive but that number could be way off. In about a month when it's time to sign up, you'll find out the price. Trips would be August 27th - September 1st.

Where do they take students in these trips? Nothing happens before August 27th? Because the intel orientation begins August 28th.

Intels can't do pre-orientation because you guys have your own orientation. Trips are either out to the Blue Ridge Mountains to hike or volunteering in Lexington, Roanoke, West Virginia or North Carolina

I think it was around $150 for Appalachian adventure, which includes your one-time membership fee to the Outing Club, which allows you to rent gear from there (for free) whenever you want.

I highly recommend doing a trip; I chose a "challenging" backpacking trip, and made some of my best friends on it. This year, I'll be leading one--probably at the "moderate" level.

I was thinking of maybe doing the habitat for humanity project in lexington. If we come down on the 28th, do our parents have to come back down on the 2nd for move in day? It's a pretty long drive to W&L for me.

You can move your stuff in before your preorientation trip-- something I didn't know last year.

Hah good to know, because I'm pretty sure my family wouldn't make the drive twice.
