Pre-orientation programs

The two pre-orientation programs that interest me the most are Excellence at Brown and TWTP. I found some old threads about TWTP on this forum, so I think I’ve gathered a lot of information about that, but I don’t know much about Excellence.

1) I’ve had a poor background in formal writing - I’ve done a fair amount of creative writing, but NO academic essays/research papers. Will Excellence help with this? I’m trying to avoid taking ENGL0110 or ENGL0130.

2) Work apart (it does seem fairly intense), is the program fun on the whole? Any alumni here?

I was rejected form the writing program for writing too well. I realize now that was probably a good thing. I decided not to apply to TWTP, but the people I know who did it loved it (two of my better friends from two very different circles met each other on the plane ride there, and hung out with each other and now are pretty very close. And everyone seems to say “Oh, remember her? she was at TWTP with us!”)

I don’t exactly know who the writing program is geared to, but if you write a lot on your own, you may just need to go to the Writing Resource Center, or sign up for a Writing Fellow to tutor you throughout the year. And maybe try to take a FYS in philosophy, or literature or something like that (even Dima Feldman’s Nanoworld FYS should involve a bit of writing). But you could definitely email the person in charge of Excellence and ask whether you should take it.

Will do. If not Excellence, I’ll definitely try get into TWTP. Thanks!
