Pre-Orientation

Any '09ers out there interested in the pre-orientation program? It would be neat for the CCers to meet up at one of these things....

I'm interested in DME and going to apply to something else (not sure though).

The DME looks interesting. I'm looking at the FLP or the outdoorsy one. I'm not particularly into the nature/outdoor stuff, but it looks fun. ugh...the only bad thing is the moola. so much $$$.

I'm looking at the FLP too as well as the FAP. Anyone know how selective they are?

no clue...but i think the FLP has the most openings...

i heard they're "pretty selective" because a lot of people apply, but i have no idea how selective that is, and how many people apply. and yes, FLP has the most openings.

i'm looking at FUP and FAP though - i figure MIT's going to be academic enough once we get in, i may as well spend the week before orientation getting to know the city/people around campus.

amrik - do you know if internationals get to take part in pre-orientation progs? will there be much time left before the actual orientation after our international orientation?

No idea. I should think so, though. I thought they would have all the F-1 paperwork already done and would just iron out everything during 19th to 21st, so you would be able to go to the FPOPs.

BTW I think we all have to fill out I-9 forms there in order to be eligible for work-study. Here is a link to show what questions they ask: http://uscis.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/files/i-9.pdf

it's not really that selective, i don't think, as long as you put some effort into answering the questions.

I heard flp was really good. Don't really know about the rest (except that DME wasn't so good)

check out prev year's intl orientation schedule. it seems that it ends on Thursday and, yeah, i guess we can ignore last two day events for the FPOP

Internationals can take part in any pre-orientation programs except one, the name of which I can't remember. :P It's on the Orientation website.

Yeah, I saw it, meder. Most activities are not mandatory, so I guess we're supposed to skip them if we participate in other pre-orientation programs.

[[ for the internationals ]] you can absolutely do fpops even though there's international orientation, with the exception of one program which i forgot, but they say so in the brochure if i recall. the first parts of international orientation are important to educate yourselves about things, but after that it's mainly just stuff you can read about, and by that time it doesnt hurt to miss out on IO to go to your fpop. in my case, i skipped IO to go to my fpop for 3 of the 4 days it was held i think, and one day IO was doing something cool, so i just asked my fpop coordinator if it was okay for me to miss a day and go with the other internationals, and it was just fine.

When do we find out what we're doing?

With the online app for these things, is it supposed to show some weird "email sent" page after you submit it?

I signed up for DB and DNSE. I hope I get one of them ;)

Have any of you guys found about your Preorientation Programs yet?
Yesterday, I got a phone call saying that I got into my first choice: Discover Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences! It's a weeklong trip to Yellowstone National Park (w/free airfare) to study geology! Is anyone else coming? I am really excited...

I'm participating in DEAPS too! Check your private messages :)

When do we find out about DME and other fpops?

I just got selected by the Freshmen Leadership Program (FLP) via email :)

Yeah me too.
