Pre Paid plan ?

I am from Alabama and I called the PACT office on Friday- out Pact plan has been in trouble with the recession etc...Anyway my daughter will graduate H in May '11 and should qualify for a full tuition scholarship if she goes in state- so I asked how the plan works- and the woman on the phone said they pay the invoice then the student is reimbursed. so it will most likely cover most of the Room and board - I hope the plan survives...Just curious if anyone has used their state prepaid plan and how it works

hi hlsess, right now PACT is up in the air. go to the savealabamapact site. at the current time no bill has been finalized to ensure pact will continue beyond next fall. there was a vote last week but nothing has saved it yet. this has created a major problem in our house. we cant afford son’s top choice without the pact contribution (an oos school) so are forced to make a decision without the guaranteed pact money…looks like my son goes instate so that if pact fails we at least can afford it!
if it survives he lost his chance to go to his top choice thanks to the situation.

however to your point, it is my understanding that at least in state, if there is a full tuition scholarship the pact money will be applied to the room and board fees and then any extra will be refunded to the student. (some out of state schools will not take the pact funds if a student gets a full tuition scholarship …so be sure to call each school to find out their policy)

Thanks- believe me I know all about the PACT mess- I was just hoping it would still be in effect for my children who are in 9th/11th now- From what I hear on the news it sounds like the state is trying to save it and there is a HUGE group of followers that go to state etc… and are fighting for the program- Good luck to your son - We looked at a few OOS schools and now she is thinking about in-state which is fine with me

i called pact last week and their comment to me was…we are paying this fall, spring and summer and next fall, then they have no idea…that is the point where possible refunds will be given (of your initial investment minus any paid out amount)…ie in my sons case if he used pact for fall and spring then we would not get a refund. and then no money available.

ok thanks- will you keep me posted if you hear anything- I have not been on top of it since I still have a year to go- I pray it’ll work out for you son/daughter

thanks for your good thoughts and i hope it is all resolved by the time your children go…

however unfortunately it is too late for our son… he must decide by may1 and this issue will not be resolved by then. When he picked his colleges we accounted for those monies being part of the funding. without that money we have approx 30K shortfall and it now puts his top choice out as it had the largest gap to begin with. As i said the very sad (ironically) part for us will be that he makes the safe financial decision now (ie does not go to his top choice), then somehow pact survives and he could have. but we do not think it is a good decision to go “hoping” that pact survives and then if it fails he has to transfer back to an instate school and loses the freshman scholarships he does have instate currently

Wow I didn’t think about that part of the problem- That is so unfair- I am sorry for your son- I have been counting on that money also in case she goes OOS but now that she is mentioning Auburn I am not so stressed about it anymore
