Has anyone been accepted as a pre-pharm major? Any current pre-pharm students who can give some pro and con info?? Does anyone know how the Pharmacy school compares to Northeastern, Rutgers or St. John's?

Uconns pharm school is brand spanking new, and really really nice. I know a bunch of pre-pharms, they pretty much take the same classes first semester as most premeds/engineering students. The first years are basics no matter where one goes. Other then that the pre-pharms at uconn take most classes first semester with pre-meds and engineering students. The chem, bio, etc., all the same. But the pharm school is good, and most pharmacists in the state are from uconn.

Northeastern has outstanding facilities (also brand new) and a prime location in Boston. The prestigious Longwood Medical District is only a few blocks from campus (Harvard Med, Beth Isreal Hospital, Chidrens Hospital, Dana Faber, Brigham and Womens). All these places hire Northeastern Pharmacy students for $$$paid internships. Students can also intern at biotech/drug companies in nearby Cambridge like Biogen, Genyzmye, Novartis, etc. Northeastern's pharmacy placement is stellar with starting salaries in the $80k range.

Thanks Maxiumus-- I think the whole pharmacy profession has a very high entry level salary no matter which University you get your degree from. Thanks for your info on Northeastern. My D did not apply there but maybe she should have!!!:)

All I have to say is look at placement from UConn. Everyone who wants a job gets one. The program has more money then anyones else public program in the Northeast. Phizer has a endowed chair. This program has big big backers, and is one of the main pipelines for pharmacists in the northeast. Its all because of the fact that most programs at UConn have almost unlimited money, and they do spend it unlike other schools.

Momsworried, why are you comparing Northeastern to UConn if your daughter did not apply to NEU? You should be comparing the schools that she actually applied to. What state do you live in? If I had to choose between Rutgers and UConn (both publics) I would choose the one that offered in state tuition. Both are better than St. Johns.

Maxiumus--my D didn't apply to NEU b/c she didn't want to. Then we heard good things from some friends who got accepted and started thinking we missed the boat. But after more investigation, it sounds like UCONN is the better choice. Her other schools are private colleges and Universities where she will have to major in chemistry and then apply to pharm schools. UCONN with its proximity to home and great pharm. reputation (not to mention the in-state tuition) sounds like a dream. Thanks for any input.

Rutgers Pharmacy is located in the heart of the pharmaceutical industry. Many large corporations are based in NJ, and therefore, Rutgers Pharmacy has the geographical advantage.

Rutgers is also a big school and you have many options of what you want to do. I am in the PharmD 6 year program at Rutgers but I am also taking basic engineering courses like all four calculuses, analytical chem, and analytical physics on top of basic business/econ/finance courses. I have a typical workload of 21 credits a semester and some more during the summer, but that is what a large school like Rutgers offers.
