Pre Pharm

I'm really looking at UB as my top choice but I don't know if I have a good chance of getting in.
My GPA is about an 86%, SAT score is 1100 not including writing, I'm still waiting on the results of my SAT II scores and I'll have 4 APs by the time I graduate highschool. I know my grades are just average but I have a lot of extracurricular activities including sports and clubs in which I have leadership positions, and I was also involved in setting up a youth court in my town. What are my chances of getting into the pre pharm program?

UB doesn’t use different admissions standards for pre-pharmacy. You seem to be in the lower 50% for GPA and in the lower quartile for SAT scores, but I’m sure many others were too. Afaik, UB doesn’t look at SATII’s but I could be wrong. Take a look at the common data set and pay attention to what they consider important that you can influence - LOR’s, and test scores particularly. You might consider taking the ACT or retaking the SAT and make sure your essays and LOR’s are good. If it’s really your top choice, you might apply ED.

you have a chance. i had a 1100 SAT and a 93 avg, and i got in for pre-pharm. You have to let them know they are your #1 choice. I called and even wrote a letter stating that and i got in off of the waitlist. i recommend you do the same

so I should apply early decision, and do I need to call them and write them a letter before I get the response

No, you don’t have to call/write when you apply. I think sb1991 was talking about how he got in off the waitlist this year, which is unranked btw, so extra attention is helpful. I would encourage you to visit the campus, if you haven’t already, and to convey via your essays that you know what you want and why UB is your top choice. If you can get some pharmacy experience, even by shadowing for a few days, that might also help.

Pharmacy is a incredibly tough program to get into, I know many friends and peers who studied hard and got in, but know even more who tried hard, and ended up having to switch into different programs. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t aim for the Pharmacy program, but just make sure to study your hardest and be prepared for the nights where all of your friends are going out and you have to study for a test the next day. Good Luck!!!

everyone gets into “pre pharm”

you take the required classes, and then you apply formally to the Pharmacy department

you get accepted based on space b/c its really competitive

alot of ppl end up changing their major b/c pharmacy os soo stressful when your not in the major. trying to sign up for the req classes and making sure that your achieving better grades than your peers so that you can essentially “secure” your spot.
