Hi, I am an incoming first year at Case Western and am considering being a physical therapist. I’m also considering other areas related to health care like physian assistant, Occupational/speech therapy and things of that nature. I realize that really I only need the required coursework to apply to grad programs, but does anyone have a suggestion of a good major for these types of programs? I’m wondering if there is a good bachelor’s degree for job prospects in case I can’t afford to go into grad school, but maybe I’m thinking about this the wrong way.
As you know as long as you get in the typical prerequisites for PT school (which you can pick up ad core courses and electives) you can choose anything as a major. Be sure it is something you excel at because you are going to need at least a 3.4 GPA for grad school and maintaining a 3.4 at Case is not an essay task.
You might consider psychology/sociology that would let you go the way of social work/occupational therapy if you are not going to PT school. Back in the day my husband’s criminology course at Case was taught by a prof from Cleveland State and his sociology grade was his lowest grade as a Chem E major…good luck.
BTW, most PT schools want 2 Biology, 2 Chem, 1 or 2 Physics, 1 Psychology, 1 Anatomy.
My DD is 2nd year into a direct entry DPT at Marquette her undergrad degree will be biomedical science. Another direct entry program she considered focused on biology as undergrad degree. Remember that most of your classmates at Case in biomed are headed to med school and classes will be very competitive.
Yes I am aware of the difficuly of Case and am prepared to work. I’ve met some students already and it is pretty noticeable that a good protion of students here are on the pre med track. Hmm I guess what I really want is something that can work as a bachelor’s if I can’t do grad school for any reason.
