Pre-professional programs

I thought about adding a post to <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/460187-how-many-music-voice-performance-majors-find-jobs-11.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/460187-how-many-music-voice-performance-majors-find-jobs-11.html</a> but decided to start a new thread here.

I know that this site is mainly for those approaching college. Some of us who came at that point just can't seem to leave! And now there are a few who are done or nearly done with their music degrees. An area I haven't seen discussed much is that of the pre-professional programs. These are orchestra or chamber music programs that are designed to help graduate performance majors gain experience prior to landing a "real" job. I wasn't really aware of these programs until my own S neared the end of his formal education.

Admission is much like winning a regular orchestra job - resume, audition, perhaps interview, and are highly competitive. They usually involve some sort of stipend and perhaps other benefits, similar to what might be found in an internship.

I thought I'd post a few of those I'm aware of. Please post others.

The Academy -- A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute

I know there are similar programs in other countries. Please feel free to add them as well.

This is a very helpful look at the “next step” in the process. We know a musician in the New World Symphony program this year - to me it sounds like a decent way to spend a year, but her mom seems anxious for her to move along and get a “real job.”

On the west coast the best opportunity for young singers and collaborative pianists is
the 2-3 year paid contract with
[LA Opera - Domingo-Thornton Young Artist Program](http://www.losangelesopera.com/yap/)

There is an Orchestral Studies program at Eastman. Info can be found on the Eastman website here: [Orchestral Studies Diploma - Eastman School of Music](http://www.esm.rochester.edu/acad_affairs/osd.php)
This is a post Bachelors Certificate that can be done on it’s own or if coming from Eastman undergrad, in conjunction with a MM.

I look forward to learning more info about “next step” programs to pass along to S.
