When I moved and switched CCs, I also changed my major. One of the pre-reqs for my new major for UCLA isn't offered at my current CC, but it was at my old one. Would it look bad to them if I apply with one course missing because it was available to me, though I didn't know I would need it? (I actually went throuh ASSIST college by college and that particular course is only offered at a grand total of 7 colleges.)

I'm wondering if I should explains this somewhere in the additional info section, or if I should just apply as my original, although impacted, major. I was planning on doing the latter, but now I'm psyching myself out. Any insight would be appreciated. :)

I asked this question during the UC forum held by admissions officers from all the UC campuses, and they all said that if your school doesn’t articulate an equivelant course, they cannot and do not hold it against you.

Keep in mind that if someone does have that prereq class which articulates then although your college doesn’t offer it, that other student is now much more competitive than you in terms of major preparation.

It’s the same as when someone asks about not
having TAP for UCLA; sure you’re not penalized, but it means there are others with TAP who are more competitive, thus actually negatively impacting your own chances.

Thanks all, I’m feeling a little better about this now that you’ve cleared my mind a bit.

My question is then if it’s more advantageous to take the alternative of applying as an impacted major for which I have everything done. The admit rate for anthro’s 67% whereas psych’s about 25%. For what it’s worth, I do have TAP, and last year everyone with TAP from a college in my district was accepted. And my GPA’s above average admitted for both. (Were my stats the “ect” you were looking for? ;))

At any rate, I’m just rambling. Anyone care to help out a little lost soul?

Apply to whatever major you are truly interested in! Don’t worry about admission rates and other factors. Pursue what you truly like and this will reflect in your UC application as well as your personal staements

Thanks for the feedback Tony. I equally want to study both, so I guess that’s my predicament. I also started a thread a while back about how I was having trouble integrating both anthropology (for Cal) and psychology in limited space. It would help if I only had to write about the one. But then again if I get admitted for psych, I could switch majors or even double. Hmm…

You do have an important point. I can envision myself delving into anthro longer because it’s pretty diverse. After all, there’s graduate school to think about. I guess a better question to ask myself would be what I would least regret doing in the long run. And right now I’m leaning towards anthro.

Again, I’m rambling. But you’ve made me think a lot and I can’t thank you enough for it

Edit: I forgot about the alternate major. Anyone have any idea about how those are treated?

You should apply with Psychology as your primary major and Anthropology as your alternate. (You can’t put an impacted major as your alternate).

Alternate majors are reserved for TAP certified students and are basically second-chance majors. If you don’t get into Psychology then you’re considered for Anthropology. If you’ve got all the prerequisites completed from your CC (I’m guessing Archaeology, Cultural, and Physical; not many CC’s offer Culture and Communication) then you’re golden. I would bet money that you get accepted into at least Anthropology.

That’s great, thanks Levonid! It feels great having someone back me up on this.

Just one more thing, I didn’t take Archaeology or Cultural Anthropology at my CC but at a uni during a summer program. I’ve been operating on the belief that they’d transfer, but I’m sure this’ll nag on my sanity come spring. I spent a long time reading threads to leech out info, and I remember your username from the last admissions cycle. Would you know if I’d be OK on this?

To be honest I am completely clueless and useless when it comes to cases like yours XD. I’ve only ever been to one CC hah.

There are transfer fairs being held at UCLA (including a TAP Conference) if you’re interested and/or in the area; it’d be a great opportunity to ask any and all questions and lay concerns to rest.

The class should transfer if it’s a basic class like cult. Anthro. Did you take it at California university? Im in a program at UCLA that gave me the benefit of having my OOSU transcripts evaluated and I got credit for everything but the more obscure classes only counted for elective credit. All the basics (intro to this and that) transferred but without a grade, just unit credit. I believe having it come from an in state uni will make a difference and a basic class like like intro to cult anthro should have no problem transferring

I figured they should transfer because they’re pretty standard classes, but it was out of state. The college is accredited, and if it matters, it’s not really obscure.

What’s the program that you’re in? Did you get your transcripts evaluated before you applied? I called and UCLA’s answer was that it’s impossible for them to reach a verdict until the hypothetical first semester.

I’m in STP. It’s kind of like Berkeleys TAP program. I’ll be applying this year, but I lived there for a week over summer and during the week I was able to meet with an adcom and an evaulator and get my OOSU transcripts evaulated. I get elective credit (no grade just units) for the more obscure classes and full transfer credit for the regular classes (Intro to Psych.) I’m sure you’ll be fine. Plus if you have TAP and as you said an above average GPA, I’m sure you’ll be admitted to your first choice.
