Pre-req Higher chance and IGETC Higher Chance QUESTION. HELP!

I hear people saying that by completing pre reqs for impacted majors, you have a higher chance of getting in? Does this mean complete the pre-reqs by the time you apply, so if I am applying for UCs fall then finish by summer, or can you still get the higher chance by completing the pre reqs even after you apply, so before you actually transfer? Lastly, does this work with completing IGETC? By when?

THANKS!

asd,

If you manage to complete all of your prereqs and IGETC and manage a GPA concurrent with the mean for admitted GPA, you’ll stand a good chance of being accepted.

Worst case scenario, I would focus on finishing your IGETC as quickly as possible.

asd, what is your major?

For some science majors it is actually the opposite as mentioned above. That is, they prefer you complete your pre-reqs and don’t care as much about IGETC. That said, if you can complete BOTH your major’s pre-reqs AND IGETC than you increase your chances even more so. Additionally, as mentioned above, GPA obviously plays a key role in all of this.

my major is international developments. so it is good to finish pre reqs or IGETC before i apply (the question i asked) or the spring before i transfer (so after I apply for UCs)?

and would i have a higher chance of getting in if i finish pre reqs or IGETC before i apply?

No, it does not make a huge difference if you finish IGETC and/or your pre-reqs before you apply. However, you should absolutley strive to finish both IGETC and your major’s pre-reqs by spring.

That said, if you can get them done before you apply, fall, it may give you a slight edge. It definitely wouldn’t hurt your chances to finish them by the fall.

but it is required to finish ur pre reqs for all the majors right?? if so, then what is this slight edge people are talking about like for econ major for ucla (for example)?

I’m going to have to disagree with you, Tony. From what I understand, it’s practically mandatory for transfers to complete their IGETC. You must have it in progress or finished by your final spring semester, and must be completed by the end of the spring semester.

Prereqs are not totally mandatory, but the more you have done, the better. I know people who had 3.7+'s, but got rejected from UCLA and UCB for psychology due to missing a prereq.

Ex: I was initially rejected from UCLA, but I appealed because I didn’t understand why I was rejected lol. As it turned out, they thought I was missing a prereq that I wasn’t…in other words, I wasn’t even considered due to that. I found out that at least for impacted majors at UCLA, if you’re missing a prereq you’re put into 1 pile of applicants and if you have all your prereqs done you’re put into a different pile. I know this because I talked with someone in admissions there.

For majors that have a TON of pre-reqs (engineering and hard sciences mainly), they list certain classes that are MANDATORY to be completed. I know for UCLA’s Biology, you have to have one year of biology, chemistry, calculus and one semester of ochem to even be considered. It’s not uncommon for applicants to have one or two of those pre-reqs or IGETC in progress in their spring semester prior to transfer so don’t worry about it.

btw good to see you still active on the transfer forums emil. How’s Cal treating you? Part of me wishes I submitted the SIR last year after seeing the rise in competition for Fall 2011’s transfer cycle. I’m already dreading going through it again in 2012 :(

Ding! Ding! Ding!

IGETC is a type of GE plan and thus somewhat analogous to what first and second year students at UCs are expected to take.

anybody that could clarify:

someone who is majoring in hard sciences or a major with a long list of pre-reqs is better off to finish IGETC before finishing pre-reqs as long as they have a 60 units and 3.0+ GPA?

“I found out that at least for impacted majors at UCLA, if you’re missing a prereq you’re put into 1 pile of applicants and if you have all your prereqs done you’re put into a different pile. I know this because I talked with someone in admissions there.” emilsinclair9

then wouldnt u have to finish up ur prereqs before you apply to UCs (not before you transfer) to be in that good pile? so those can come into play when they are deciding if they want to accept you or not. If not, after you get accepted, it is not as same as being an applicant to be accepted right? you basically need to get some stuff done before you transfer to be in good status. so why would they make the people who got accepted to go through if they will get rejected or be accepted for the second time again?

also, how do you determine which pre-reqs to finish to not get rejected? i’m majoring in international developments for UCLA and political science for other UCs.

@emilsinclair9 and @eyethink: I was not talking about finishing pre-reqs before transfer. OBVIOUSLY this is not mandatory but you should ABSOLUTELY finish your pre-reqs before transfering.

What the OP, asd, was asking was whether he had to finish his pre-reqs by fall (aka before he applies/fills out the application) or if it was okay to complete them in spring.

This is what I said…

So would you guys agree?
